What the shushing face 🤫 means in a chat
A finger pressed to closed lips: 🤫 is the emoji version of “shh.” Most of the time it means “keep this between us” or “I’m not saying yet,” so it follows gossip, surprise plans and teasers for news. Aimed at rival fans or someone mid-argument, it turns into a cheeky “quiet now.”

“Shh”: keep this secret, or wait and see. It can also guard a find someone won’t share, or tell rivals to pipe down.
What 🤫 can mean
1. Keep it between us
The core meaning. Someone shares gossip, a crush, a surprise-party plan or news that isn’t public yet, then adds 🤫 so it goes no further. “Don’t say anything at work, but I handed in my notice 🤫” is as much trust as secrecy: out of everyone, they chose to tell you.
2. Something is coming
Brands, creators and musicians use 🤫 to hint at news without giving it away: a blurred product shot, a date and nothing else, “big things on the 14th 🤫.” Followers answer with guesses, which is half the point. A teaser that never pays off, though, leaves people more irritated than curious.
3. Gatekeeping, on purpose
In Gen Z slang, gatekeeping means keeping a great find to yourself: a quiet beach, a cheap tailor, the shop an outfit came from. Answering “where’s that from?” with nothing but 🤫 is the playful version. It is nearly always a joke, and the answer often turns up in a DM later.
4. Quiet now
The shush is also a taunt. Footballers put a finger to their lips after scoring to silence rival fans, and supporters copy it with 🤫 after a win: “who said we’d go down? 🤫.” Mid-argument it means “stop talking,” which is ruder than it looks. And sometimes the quiet is literal: a sleeping baby, an exam, a library.
When someone sends you 🤫
What it means in a DM
Mostly trust. If they tell you something and finish with 🤫, they are asking you to keep it, and “won’t say a word” is the right answer. A bare 🤫 in reply to your question means “you’ll find out” or “not telling,” so push gently or play along. If it lands in the middle of a disagreement, it is closer to “shut up,” and it is fair to say so.
Is it flirty?
Sometimes. “Our little secret 🤫” or “don’t tell anyone I said you looked good 🤫” is a flirt that makes you feel like an insider. Far more often, though, the secret is gossip, a gift or a work rumour. Secrecy about the two of you is the flirty kind; secrecy about everyone else is just gossip.

Questions people ask
What does 🤫🧏♂️ mean?
It is a meme about “mewing,” a trend of resting the tongue against the roof of the mouth in the hope of a sharper jawline. The joke: when asked a question, someone shushes you and runs a finger along their jaw, as if they can’t talk mid-mew. 🤫 is the shush, and 🧏♂️, with a hand raised to his ear, stands in for the jaw gesture. Teenagers use it most, and almost always ironically.
What is the difference between 🤫 and 🤐?
🤫 shushing face asks someone else to stay quiet, or marks news as secret. 🤐 zipper-mouth face is the speaker promising silence: “my lips are sealed,” or “I’d better not comment.” So when a friend tells you a secret with 🤫, 🤐 is the natural answer.
Is 🤫 rude?
Not between friends swapping secrets. It turns rude when aimed at someone you disagree with, where it reads as “shut up,” and it is a taunt when sent to fans of a losing team. Among people who enjoy the banter that is fine; with strangers it is needless needling.
When was the shushing face added?
It arrived in Emoji 5.0 in 2017 under the formal Unicode name “face with finger covering closed lips,” and reached iPhones with iOS 11.1 late that year. 🤭, the giggle behind a hand, came in the same release.
Should a brand use 🤫 to tease a launch?
It works for a short, specific teaser: a date, a silhouette, one 🤫. Name the day if you can, reply to the guesses in the comments, and reveal soon. A run of vague teasers with no payoff tends to draw “just tell us” rather than excitement.
