What a brown heart means when people send it
🤎 usually means one of two things: pride and solidarity among Black and brown people, or love for something brown, such as coffee, chocolate, autumn leaves or a chocolate Labrador. It is warm and friendly, rarely romantic, and newer than most hearts.
Updated 6 October 2026
Pride in brown skin and heritage, support for people of colour, or love for brown things: coffee, chocolate, autumn and earthy tones.
What 🤎 can mean
1. Pride in brown skin and heritage
For many people of colour, 🤎 says “this is me.” It sits in bios next to a country flag, under selfies and in posts about family roots. Many South Asians in the UK and North America call themselves brown, as do many Latino and Middle Eastern people, so the heart turns up in desi memes about strict “brown parents” as often as in posts about skin. A darker skin-tone emoji beside it, such as ✊🏾 or 🙌🏽, makes the meaning plain.
2. Solidarity and racial justice
During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, brown and black hearts appeared next to raised fists across social media as a sign of support. The pairing matters in LGBTQ+ spaces too: Philadelphia added black and brown stripes to its pride flag in 2017 to include queer people of colour, and the Progress Pride flag of 2018 kept them. In a Pride Month post, 🤎 often points to that.
3. Coffee, chocolate and cosy season
The everyday, non-political use. Cafés post it with a flat white, bakers with brownies and cinnamon rolls, and plenty of people use it all autumn, from the first spiced latte to piles of leaves. It also suits the warm, neutral look of beige outfits, wooden furniture and latte-coloured nails, and owners use it for brown dogs, cats and horses.
4. Brown team colours
Few big teams wear brown, so their fans lean on this heart. The Cleveland Browns in the NFL are brown and orange (🤎🧡). Baseball’s San Diego Padres went back to brown and gold in 2020 (🤎💛). In Germany, FC St. Pauli play in brown and white, so their supporters post 🤎🤍.
When someone sends you 🤎
What it means in a DM
Mostly warmth with no romantic pressure. A friend might send it after you share a family photo or a cosy autumn snap. If you have just talked about race, heritage or a hard experience, it means “I see you” or “I’m with you,” and a simple thank-you is enough. From someone who uses it all the time, it may simply be their favourite colour.
Is it flirty?
Not usually. 🤎 is a grounded, friendly heart, chosen for pride, comfort or taste rather than romance. Some couples put hearts that match their skin tones in a shared bio, so 🤍🤎 can stand for a mixed couple, and between two people already dating it is loving. From someone new, read it as warmth.

Questions people ask
When was the brown heart added?
🤎 arrived in Emoji 12.0 in 2019, together with 🤍 white heart, and reached iPhones with iOS 13.2 that October. It is far newer than ❤️ or 💙, which date from the first emoji sets.
Is 🤎 always about race?
No. In a café post, an autumn photo or a dog picture it is just the colour. It points to identity when it sits beside a skin-tone emoji, a flag, or words about heritage, racism or pride. When you can’t tell, the post itself almost always settles it.
What does 🤎 mean in someone’s bio?
Usually pride in their background, a love of coffee and warm tones, or a brown team. Check its neighbours: 🇮🇳🤎 or ✊🏾🤎 points to identity, ☕🤎 to coffee, and 🤎🧡 to the Cleveland Browns.
Can a brand use 🤎?
Yes. Coffee, chocolate, beauty and home brands use it all the time. Take more care around Black History Month (February in the US, October in the UK) and posts about racism: a brown heart from a company that says nothing else on the subject can look like it is borrowing a cause. Thank-yous and product posts are safe ground.
What is the difference between 🤎 and 🖤?
🖤 is older, from 2016, and carries more meanings: goth style, grief, dark humour and Black pride. 🤎 is softer and narrower: brown skin, warm colours and comfort. Put together, they stand for Black and brown people side by side.
