Crying face 😢: what one tear means

One tear, one plain message: 😢 says the sender is sad, disappointed or sorry for someone. It is quieter than the flood on 😭 and rarely a joke, so people who send it usually mean it. It also covers “aww” moments that are sweet and a little sad.

😢

Genuine, quiet sadness: disappointment, missing someone, or sympathy. Unlike 😭, it is rarely used for laughing.

What 😢 can mean

1. Sad or disappointed

The plain meaning. 😢 marks small and middling letdowns: a cancelled trip, a sold-out size, a friend moving away. It also softens bad news you have to deliver yourself, as in “can’t make it tonight 😢,” so the other person knows you are sorry too.

2. Sympathy for someone else

Under another person’s sad news it says “I’m sorry this happened” without making the moment about your own feelings, which a dramatic 😭 can do. Instagram’s one-tap emoji row above the comment box, added in 2018, included 😢 among its eight defaults, which may be one reason it turns up so often under sad posts.

3. Missing someone

“Miss you 😢” is one of its warmest uses: affection with a pout. Long-distance friends, partners and grandparents send it, and the sadness in it is mostly a way of saying the other person matters.

4. Soft or playful sadness

For small things the tear turns gentle or theatrical: the café with the good croissants closing, the last slice of cake gone, the final episode of a favourite show. Nobody is really upset; it is a sigh with a face on it.

When someone sends you 😢

What it means in a DM

Take it at face value: they are sad, disappointed or missing you. If it answers your news (“the job’s great, but it’s in another city”), it means they will miss you. If it comes with their own news, ask what happened or say you’re sorry. For small letdowns a light reply is fine; for a real loss, write something instead of sending an emoji back.

Is it flirty?

Not really. The exception is “miss you 😢” from someone you are seeing, which is affectionate: they want to see you. On its own, 😢 is about sadness, not attraction.

Questions people ask

Is 😢 the same as 😭?

No. They share tears but not tone. 😭 is the wailing face, and younger users have turned it into a laugh, so on its own it can mean almost anything. 😢, with one tear and a small frown, hasn’t gone through that change. If you need a message read as sad, 😢 is the safer pick.

What is the difference between 😢 and 🥲?

🥲 smiling face with tear, added in 2020, is bittersweet: smiling through a small disappointment, or touched and amused at once. 😢 has no smile in it, so it is simply sad.

Is 😪 a crying face?

No, though it often gets used as one. 😪 is sleepy face, and the drop by its nose is a snot bubble, a Japanese comic shorthand for being asleep. 😥 sad but relieved face has a bead of sweat, not a tear. If you want a tear, 😢 is the one.

Is 😢 the same as Facebook’s Sad reaction?

Close, but no. Sad is one of Facebook’s seven post reactions, introduced in 2016 along with Love, Haha, Wow and Angry, and it is an image rather than an emoji. Both show a face with a tear and both say “this is sad,” but only the emoji can sit inside a comment or a message.
