Auto reply to comments on your Facebook Page

A Facebook comment auto reply answers people who comment on your Page's posts, in up to two places: a short public reply under the comment and one private message in Messenger. Meta allows one private message per comment, within 7 days, and the chat only continues if they answer. Below are both kinds to copy, for the comments Pages get most.

  • Public reply: message sent

Thanks for asking! We've sent you the details in Messenger 💬

The reply shows under the comment as your Page, so everyone reading the thread can see the question was answered.

  • Public reply on an event post

Just messaged you about tickets 🎟️ Have a look in Messenger.

Event posts tend to collect the same question again and again. A short public reply under each one shows the Page is on it.

  • Public answer that helps everyone

Yes, we deliver to {area}, usually within {time}. The same goes for anyone else wondering.

Some answers belong in public. A delivery area or opening time answered under the post saves the next person from asking.

  • Public reply to a complaint, by hand

We're sorry to read this, and we'd like to put it right. We've sent you a private message so we can look into your order properly.

Never let a keyword auto-reply answer a complaint. Reply yourself, briefly and in public, then carry on in Messenger.

  • Thanks for a kind comment, by hand

Thank you so much, {name}, that's lovely to read. We'll pass it on to the team.

Praise deserves a personal line. The same template under every kind comment starts to read like a bot.

  • Messenger message for a recipe post

Hi! You commented RECIPE on our post, so here's an automatic message. Would you like the full recipe, with amounts and timings, sent here? Reply and it's yours.

A recipe sent to Messenger is easy to find again later, which is the whole point for anyone planning to cook it.

  • Messenger message for an event

Thanks for commenting on the {event} post! Our Page sends this message automatically. Can I send you the start times and the ticket link? Reply YES.

Times and tickets are what people want from an event post, so name both in the question.

  • Messenger message for a quote

Hi, thanks for your comment! Our Page answers comments like yours automatically. To give you a price, could you tell us what needs doing and roughly where you are?

No link needed here: the aim is the details a quote depends on. A person can take over from their answer.

  • “Is this still available?”

Thanks for asking! I'm the Page's automatic assistant, so I can't see the stock room, but the live sizes and stock are on our order page. Want the link? Reply YES.

An automatic message can't know what's in stock, so it points to the page that does instead of promising anything.

  • Messenger message for volunteers or members

Thank you for wanting to help! This message is automatic. Shall we send you the sign-up form and the next dates? Just reply YES.

Works for clubs, charities and community groups that recruit from their Page posts.

  • Second message, with the link

Here's everything: {link}. Questions about any of it? Reply in this chat and a person from our team will get back to you.

In DMFast this is a card with a button, sent as soon as they answer, well inside the 24 hours Meta allows.

  • When they reply with a question

Thanks, and that's a fair question: {answer}. The link above covers the rest, and we're here if you need anything else.

In DMFast any reply sends the link card, even a question, so answer what they actually asked as well, by hand, within 24 hours.

  • Weekend public reply

Thanks! We've sent you a message, and if you have more questions, the team is back on Monday at {time}.

Sets expectations for anyone who answers the message over the weekend and hopes for a quick human reply.

First DM (plain text)

Hello! Our Page sent this message automatically because you commented INTERESTED. Shall I send you the dates, prices and booking details in this chat? A quick YES will do.Yes pleaseDates, prices and bookingSee the details

“Interested” is a word people already leave under Facebook posts, and whole-word matching catches it in any case. A Page gets one Messenger message per comment, so this one asks a yes-or-no question and saves the link card for their answer.

  1. Pick a post

Connect your Facebook Page, then choose the Page post it runs on, or every post.

  2. Set the word: INTERESTED

Anyone who comments INTERESTED gets a reply under their comment and a DM. Capitals don't matter.

  3. Paste the message

Add the public reply and the first DM shown here. Once they answer, your link follows as a card.

Rules to know

  1. Each comment on your Page's posts can get one private message from the Page in Messenger, sent no later than 7 days after the comment.
  2. Nothing more can be sent until the commenter writes back. From their reply, the Page has 24 hours to send the link and anything else.
  3. Meta's Messenger policy requires automated conversations to disclose that they're automated.
  4. Facebook doesn't tell apps who follows a Page, so “follow to get the link” steps only work on Instagram.
  5. Meta's messaging API, which comment auto-reply apps use, works with Pages, not personal profiles.

Built-in tools versus an auto-reply app

Meta Business Suite's Inbox automations, as Meta's help centre describes them, reply to people who message your business on Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp: instant replies, away messages, FAQs, location, contact information, hours and custom keywords. A Comment to message template, which replies to a comment that contains specific hashtags, is listed too, and Meta says it is only available on Meta Business Suite on a desktop. Facebook's comment moderation can also hide comments containing words you choose. If your Business Suite Automations list shows an option for comments, try it before paying for anything.

Apps built on Meta's Messenger Platform add a comment trigger. In DMFast you choose one Page post or every post and set the word. Each matching comment gets a public reply, picked at random from the versions you wrote, and a plain-text message in Messenger. Once they answer, a card with your link follows, or first a question asking for their email. Comments containing web links are skipped as spam, and each person is answered once a day per auto-reply.

Tip: In DMFast the Messenger message always goes out and the public reply is optional. For public-only replies with no message, write them by hand.

Which comments to answer automatically

CommentAutomatic?Why
A word you asked for, like INTERESTED or RECIPEYesThey asked for something specific, and the message delivers it
“Price?” or “How much?”Yes, with PRICE and HOW MUCH as wordsThe same answer suits everyone who asks
“Is this still available?”Yes, with AVAILABLE as the wordPoint to a page with live stock rather than promising any
A complaintNoAnswer by hand in public, then move to Messenger
Praise or a reviewNoA short personal thank-you reads better than a template
Friends tagging friendsNoThey're talking to each other, not to you

Sending a private message to everyone who comments is allowed, but people who wrote “lovely!” didn't ask to hear from you in Messenger, and some will block the Page. Keep automatic messages for comments that asked for something.

Keyword traps on Facebook

  • INTERESTED also matches “not interested”, so expect the odd message to someone who wasn't.
  • Words match whole: PRICE won't catch “prices” or “pricing”. List each form you see in your comments.
  • A phrase such as HOW MUCH matches anywhere in the comment, which helps with questions people word differently.
  • Very common words, like INFO or YES, go off on comments that weren't asking for anything. Use them only on a post that asks for them.
  • Emoji can't be keywords, so ask people to comment a word, not a 🙋.

Checking it works

Before the post goes live, comment the word from a personal profile and follow the whole path: the public reply, the Messenger message, your answer and the card. A week later, scroll through the comments that got no reply. Words people used that you didn't list are your next keywords.

Two numbers tell you how it's going: how many commenters answered the Messenger message, and how many of them tapped the card. Few answers usually means the message is long or the question is vague. Few taps suggests the card's title doesn't match what people expected from the post.

Questions people ask

Can Facebook auto reply to comments without an app?

Meta Business Suite's automations mainly answer messages, and Facebook's comment moderation hides comments with words you choose rather than replying to them. Check Inbox, then Automations, in Business Suite to see whether your Page offers a comment option. Keyword replies with a public answer, a Messenger message and a link card come from apps on Meta's Messenger Platform.

Does the commenter need Messenger?

The private reply arrives in Messenger, which they can read in the Messenger app or in their Facebook messages on the web. If they never open it, the conversation stops there, because the Page can't send anything else until they answer.

Will someone get a message every time they comment?

No. Meta allows one private message per comment, and DMFast answers each person once a day per auto-reply, so three comments in an hour still mean one message.

Can I reply in public only, without a message?

Not with DMFast: every comment auto-reply sends the Messenger message, and the public reply is the optional part. Public-only thank-yous are better written by hand anyway, because one line repeated under every comment looks automated.

What about comments made before I set it up?

On paid plans, DMFast can go back over comments from the last 7 days and answer the ones that match. Anything older is past Meta's limit for a private reply, so answer those in public and invite them to message the Page.

Can I send the link only to people who follow the Page?

No. Facebook doesn't tell apps who follows a Page, so there's no follower check on Facebook. On Instagram, DMFast's “Only send to followers” option does exactly this.
