Make a sticker from any photo

Tap the person, pet or thing in your photo and an AI model cuts it out on your own device. Add a white outline and a soft shadow, then save a 512 × 512 WebP for WhatsApp, a PNG of the same size, or a full-size PNG to drop into an Instagram Story. Your photo never leaves this page.

Downloads once: SlimSAM cut-out model (Xenova/slimsam-77-uniform), about 13 MB

How it works

  1. 1Choose a photo

Pick a photo or a screenshot of up to 40 MB. The first time, your browser downloads the 13 MB SlimSAM model and keeps it, so the next visit starts straight away.

  2. 2Tap what you want

The model reads the photo once, then every tap updates the cut-out in a fraction of a second. Switch to Remove and tap a part to cut it away, or paint the edge with the brush.

  3. 3Style it

Set the white outline anywhere from none to 24 px (WhatsApp suggests 8) and turn the soft shadow on or off. The preview shows the finished sticker on a see-through background.

  4. 4Save it

Download a 512 × 512 WebP kept under 100 KB for WhatsApp, a 512 × 512 PNG, or a full-size PNG of up to 2048 px for Stories, or copy it to paste straight into one.

The WhatsApp sticker rules it follows

WhatsApp publishes its sticker requirements in the developer guide on its official GitHub. A sticker is exactly 512 × 512 pixels with a transparent background, saved as WebP (sticker apps on iPhone may also use PNG). A still sticker can be at most 100 KB, and WhatsApp recommends an 8 px white stroke so the art stays readable on dark, light and patterned chat backgrounds.

Tip: To send a single sticker you don’t need a pack. WhatsApp’s own sticker maker, on iPhone and on Android since August 2024, turns a picture from your gallery into a sticker, so save the PNG and choose it there.

Putting the sticker in an Instagram Story

  1. Save the full-size PNG. It is trimmed to the sticker’s edge and keeps up to 2048 px on its long side, more than a 1080 × 1920 Story needs.
  2. Open the Story editor, tap the sticker icon and choose the photo sticker, then pick the PNG from your photos. Its transparent background stays transparent.
  3. On iPhone you can instead press Copy image here, then open the Story editor: Instagram usually offers to add the copied picture as a sticker.
  4. Pinch to resize it, and keep it clear of the top and bottom of the screen, where Instagram’s own buttons sit.

Instagram has a built-in Cutouts sticker too, added in May 2024, which makes a sticker from a photo or video in your camera roll and picks out the subject automatically. This tool lets you choose exactly what stays, adds the white outline and shadow, and gives you a file you can reuse in Reels covers, WhatsApp, slides or a shop listing.

What the cut-out handles well, and where it struggles

The model is SlimSAM, a slimmed-down version of the Segment Anything model, and it answers taps rather than guessing the subject. It looks at your photo at 1024 px on the long side and returns a 256 × 256 mask. The tool smooths that edge to the pixel, drops stray specks and fills pinholes, but loose hair, fur and the rim of a glass won’t be exact. The white outline hides small misses; for a stubborn edge, switch to the brush and paint the last bit by hand.

  • Works best on one clear subject: a person, a pet, a mug on a table, a product held up to the camera.
  • One tap often selects a whole object. If a part is missing, tap it too; if a hand holding a product comes along, switch to Remove and tap the hand.
  • Struggles with subjects the same colour as the background, with glass and smoke, and with very small things in a wide shot.
  • Takes photos of up to 40 MB. Anything above 16 megapixels is scaled down first, and HEIC photos may not open outside Safari, so use JPEG or PNG.

Privacy works like this: the cut-out, the outline and the files are all made in your browser, using your graphics chip through WebGPU where the browser offers it and WebAssembly where it doesn’t. The model is downloaded from Hugging Face once. Safari can’t write WebP files by itself, so there a small WebP encoder (about 120 KB) is downloaded the first time you save the WhatsApp version. Your photo is never uploaded.

Questions people ask

What size is a WhatsApp sticker?

Exactly 512 × 512 pixels, as a WebP file with a transparent background. WhatsApp’s developer guide caps a still sticker at 100 KB (an animated one at 500 KB) and recommends an 8 px white outline. The WhatsApp download here meets all of that.

Can I add a sticker to WhatsApp without a sticker app?

For one sticker, yes. WhatsApp’s built-in sticker maker on iPhone and Android turns a picture from your gallery into a sticker, so save the PNG and pick it there. A whole pack of 3 to 30 stickers has to come from a sticker app.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The cut-out runs in your browser and the files are made there too. The only downloads are the 13 MB model, once, and in Safari a small WebP encoder the first time you save a WhatsApp sticker.

Why does a new photo take a few seconds?

The model has to read each new photo once before it can answer taps. That takes a few seconds, less on a graphics chip than without one, and the first visit also downloads the model. After that every tap updates the cut-out in a fraction of a second.

Why does the sticker have a white outline?

Stickers land on chat backgrounds that can be dark, light or busy, and a white edge keeps the cut-out readable on all of them. It also hides small misses at the edge of the cut-out. Set the outline to None if you want the bare cut-out.
