Instagram hashtag checker

Type a word and see the hashtags Instagram relates to it, with the number of posts each has, sorted into four size bands. Copy a mixed five, or any single tag. The page also sets out what is and isn’t known about how many hashtags a post can hold.

How it works

  1. 1Type a word or a short phrase

For example skincare or home bakery. A phrase is also shown as one tag with the spaces removed, so you can see that tag on its own.

  2. 2We ask Instagram’s own search

One search returns the related hashtags and the post count Instagram shows for each. A search is kept for 7 days, so a popular word costs nothing.

  3. 3Tags are sorted by size

Under 100K posts, 100K to 1M, 1M to 10M, and 10M and over. Your own tag gets its own row, and if Instagram’s results leave it out, we say so.

  4. 4Copy a mixed five

Two small tags, two middle-sized ones and one big one where the results have them, closest matches first. Copy the five, or any tag on its own.

How many hashtags can a post hold?

Instagram’s Help Center article “Use hashtags on Instagram” (help.instagram.com/351460621611097, read on 7 October 2026) says: “You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.” A Social Samosa report dated 19 December 2025 says Instagram announced it would limit the hashtags in a caption to five, and quotes Instagram: “Instagram will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five.” Meta’s developer reference for publishing a post through its API, last updated 28 September 2026, still lists a maximum of “2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags” for a caption.

So the two figures disagree, and this page shows both. For what you type in the app, five is the number Instagram’s own help article gives, which is why the page offers a set of five. The same article says tags can go in the caption or in comments, and that tags from private profiles won’t appear publicly on hashtag pages. We can’t say why the API reference still lists 30.

What a post count means

The number beside a tag is the post count Instagram shows for it. It tells you how many posts have used the tag. It does not tell you how many people a post using it will reach, how often anyone browses it, or how new posts are shown there, and nothing on this page claims any of that. The four bands are our own rough sizes, chosen to make a long list easier to scan.

Instagram’s own line on the change, as Social Samosa quoted it, was that “using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram”. Choose tags that describe the post, and look at a tag’s page before you rely on it.

How the mixed five is chosen

It is our own rule, not a recipe with evidence behind it. We take up to two tags under 100K posts, two between 100K and 1M and one between 1M and 10M, with Instagram’s closest matches first and your own tag first in its size. If a size has too few tags, the gap is filled from the others, and if the results hold fewer than five tags you get fewer. The aim is only that a set isn’t all enormous tags or all tiny ones.

Tip: A tag that suits the post beats a tag that only has the right size. Drop any tag in the five that doesn’t describe what you are posting.

Why your own tag may not be in the results

Instagram’s search returns related tags, not always the one you typed, and the results can lean towards one region and may leave a tag out. A tag missing from the list can still exist. The page shows your tag as its own row either way, with its size when it appears in the results and a note when it doesn’t. Look it up in Instagram’s own search to see its page.

The tags in Instagram’s search results are letters, numbers and underscores with no spaces, so that is how this page reads a tag. Instagram’s Help Center adds that numbers are allowed in a hashtag but spaces and special characters such as $ or % won’t work. “skin-care” has a hyphen, so it isn’t checked as a tag as typed, though the related tags below it are. Tags in other scripts, such as Hindi or Arabic, are read the same way.

Questions people ask

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram’s Help Center says up to five tags on a post, and that more than five on a single photo or video means your comment won’t post. Meta’s API reference, updated 28 September 2026, still lists 30 for a published caption. Use five or fewer.

What do the post counts mean?

They are the post counts Instagram showed next to each tag when we searched. They say how many posts have used a tag, not how many people a post will reach. A search is kept up to 7 days, so a count can be a few days old.

Why isn’t my hashtag in the results?

Instagram’s search returns related tags, not always the one you typed, and the results can lean towards one region. Your tag still gets its own row, with its size when it appears and a note when it doesn’t.

How does the mixed five work?

Up to two tags under 100K posts, two between 100K and 1M and one between 1M and 10M, with the closest matches first and your own tag first in its size. It is our own mix, not a promise of reach.

Does the checker cost anything?

No, and you don’t sign in. Each new word uses 1 of your free checks for today, and a word searched in the last 7 days costs nothing.
