Instagram account audit in nine checks

Type any public Instagram username and get a checklist: the bio, the link, the category, how often the account posts, which formats it uses, engagement against followers and whether its captions ask for comments. Each check shows what we found, the line we used and one fix.

How it works

  1. 1Type a username

Or paste a profile link. The account has to be public. A private one shows its bio and link but nothing about its posts.

  2. 2We read the profile

One look-up returns the public profile and its 12 newest posts. We keep what we read for up to a day, so an account someone checked today costs nothing.

  3. 3Nine checks run in your browser

Bio length and clarity, link, category, posting rhythm, format mix, engagement, captions that ask for comments and comments per like.

  4. 4Read it, copy it or act on it

Each check says what it found and gives one fix. Copy the checklist as text, or follow a link where DMFast does something about it.

The nine checks and the line each one uses

CheckWhat it looks atCounts as a pass when
Bio lengthCharacters in the bio, an emoji counted as one40 or more (our line, not Instagram’s)
Bio clarityWords for who the account is for or what it does, and a next stepBoth are found (English bios only)
Link in bioThe first link on the profileThere is one and it isn’t only another social profile
Business categoryThe category on a professional accountOne shows on the profile
Posting rhythmDates of the newest posts, pinned-looking ones set asideA post in the last 14 days, and a median gap of 7 days or less
Format mixReels, photos and carouselsTwo formats with at least two posts each
EngagementMedian of (likes + comments) ÷ followersAt or above 0.45%
Captions that askCaptions that ask for a comment, with a word or in plain words3 or more of the 12
Comments per likeMedian of comments ÷ likesAt least 1 comment for every 100 likes

Those lines are ours, not Instagram’s. Every check on the result has a “How we check this” note with its line, so you can disagree with it. The score, when there is one, counts a pass as 1, could improve as ½ and missing as 0, and leaves out checks we can’t read. With fewer than six readable checks, as on a private account, there is no score.

Reading the engagement check

Engagement here is likes plus comments divided by followers, worked out for each of the 12 newest posts. We take the middle post rather than the average, so one viral post can’t lift the number. When most of the 12 hide their likes, the check says it can’t tell.

We compare it with Socialinsider’s Instagram benchmarks page, which gives 0.45% as the platform’s overall engagement rate for the second quarter of 2026. The same page puts Reels at 0.48%, which is a different number. We read it on 7 October 2026. Its method note describes 35 million posts from 447,613 brand pages and the same sum we use. It is one average for every account size, and a middle post usually sits below an average, so treat the comparison as a yardstick, not a verdict.

Tip: A very large account often lands under the line. The line isn’t adjusted for size, so that can say little about the content. The check still shows the rate, so you can judge it yourself.

What the audit can’t see

  • Private accounts. Only the bio, the link and the category can be checked, and the post checks say “Can’t tell”.
  • Hidden likes. When most of the 12 posts hide them, the engagement and comments-per-like checks say “Can’t tell”.
  • More than one link. Instagram’s Help Center says you can add up to five websites to a profile (TechCrunch reported up to five in April 2023), and we read the first.
  • A hidden or unset category. They look the same from outside, so the check says what shows and no more.
  • Pinned posts. This data doesn’t mark them, so we set aside leading posts that are older than the ones after them, and say how many.
  • Bios in other languages. The bio check reads English words and says “Can’t tell” for a bio that clearly isn’t English.
  • Anything that isn’t public, such as the numbers an account’s owner can look up in their own Instagram Insights.

The numbers are public data, read when you press the button or up to a day earlier. The result says when.

From checklist to action

Start with the check that costs least. A bio line that says who you help and what to do next takes five minutes. The caption check takes longer but changes what people do: if no caption asks for anything, give people a word to comment.

Where DMFast does something about a check, the result says so and links to it: comment-to-DM for the words your captions ask for, the link-in-bio page when there is no link, and the store for sellers in India. DMFast works with professional accounts (Business and Creator), not personal ones.

Questions people ask

Is the Instagram account audit free?

Yes, and you don’t sign in. An account someone checked in the last day costs nothing. A new account uses one of a small number of free look-ups a day, and the page tells you if you have reached it.

Can I audit a private account?

Only its profile: the bio, the link and the category. Its posts can’t be read, so the post checks say “Can’t tell” and no score is given.

Why does a clear bio come out as missing?

The bio check looks for words: who you help or what you do, and a next step such as “DM me” or “link below”. A bio that says it in other words can miss. A bio that is clearly not in English shows “Can’t tell” instead.

Is 150 characters really the bio limit?

Yes. Instagram’s Help Center article on adding a bio says: “You can write a bio of up to 150 characters on your Instagram profile.” It doesn’t say how emoji are counted. The audit counts characters the way you see them, with an emoji as one.

What does the audit keep?

We keep the public profile and its 12 newest posts for up to a day, so the same account doesn’t cost us twice. We read no comments, and nothing is posted to the account.
