What is a hashtag?
A hashtag is a word or phrase written after the # sign, with no spaces, that works as a label. People tap or search it to see other posts that use the same one. This page covers how they are used and what Meta’s developer documentation says about searching them.
Updated 6 October 2026
A word or phrase written with a # in front and no spaces, such as #sourdough. It labels a post so people can find other posts about the same topic.
What a hashtag does
A hashtag groups content by topic. If you write #sourdough in a caption, the post can be found alongside others that carry the same tag. The tag is just text: nobody owns it, and anyone can start one. A hashtag can be a topic (#houseplants), a place (#lisbon), an event or a community.
- Write it without spaces. Capitalising each word, as in #HomeBakers, is easier to read and is commonly recommended for screen readers.
- Letters and numbers are fine. Instagram’s Help Center says numbers are allowed, but spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.
- A hashtag can be popular and still useless to you if the people using it are not your audience.
- Instagram’s Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that if you include more than 5 on a single photo or video, your comment won’t post. It doesn’t say what Instagram rewards, so judge that from your own insights.
- Posts from public accounts appear on the hashtag page, and the Help Center says posts tagged by people with private profiles won’t appear publicly there. You can only tag your own posts.
What Meta’s hashtag search API allows
Meta’s Instagram Platform documentation for hashtag search describes a way for an app, working for a Business or Creator account, to find public media that carries a given hashtag. The documentation lists these limits.
| Limit | What the documentation says |
|---|---|
| Number of hashtags | A maximum of 30 unique hashtags per Business or Creator account in a rolling 7-day period |
| What counts as a query | Searching for a hashtag, and also fetching its recent or top media |
| Stories | Hashtags on Stories are not supported |
| Emojis | Emojis in hashtag queries are not supported |
| Commenting | You cannot comment on hashtagged media found through the API |
| Sensitive tags | Hashtags Meta deems sensitive or offensive return a generic error |
| Access | The app needs App Review for Instagram Public Content Access and the instagram_basic permission |
The documentation also says it can return the most recent and the top media for a hashtag. In plain terms: an approved tool can research what is being posted under a tag, but it cannot reply to those posts for you.
Mistakes to avoid
- Mixing a disclosure into a pile of tags. The FTC’s influencer guide says not to bury a disclosure in a group of hashtags or links.
- Using a tag you never checked. Search it first to see what else sits under it.
- Treating a comment keyword as a hashtag. A word like GUIDE that triggers an automatic reply is plain text with no # needed.
An example
A plant shop adds #HousePlantCare and #Repotting to a Reel about root-bound ferns. It then searches both tags to see what other posts show up under them before choosing the next topic.
Questions people ask
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 on a post, according to Instagram’s Help Center, which also says that more than 5 on a single photo or video means your comment won’t post. Meta’s API reference still lists 30 for a published caption. Beyond that limit there is no official best number, so choose tags that describe the post and watch what your own insights show.
Are hashtags the same on Facebook?
The idea is the same: a # tag that labels a post. How each platform surfaces them differs and changes, so check the app for how they behave on a Page.
Can I search a hashtag through the Instagram API?
Yes, with limits. Meta’s documentation says an app can query up to 30 unique hashtags per account in a rolling 7-day period, and needs App Review for Instagram Public Content Access plus the instagram_basic permission.
Does a hashtag work in a Story?
You can write one, but Meta’s hashtag search documentation says hashtags on Stories are not supported in the API, so those posts do not show up in that kind of search.
