WP means “well played”: a quick, sporting way to say that someone’s move or match was good.
What WP can mean
1. Well played
The meaning almost everywhere. After a clever move in an online match, the other player may type “wp” to show respect. It can also be said about real-life sports, quizzes and arguments won fairly.
2. Sarcastic “well played”
If a teammate makes a mistake, “wp” can be a dry joke. Tone is hard to read in text, so the context of the match, and any emoji, tells you which way it goes.
3. WordPress
Outside games, WP is often short for WordPress, the website platform. It shows up in business and web design posts, with “WP site” or “WP plugin”.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs about games
Friends send “wp” after a match, often with “gg”. It is a short thank-you for a good game, whether you won or lost.
Comments on gaming Reels
Under a clip of a clever play, “wp” credits the player. Streamers’ clip pages get a lot of these.
Stories and group chats
After a football match among friends or a quiz night, “wp” is a light way to say well done to the winner.

Where it comes from
WP is a plain initialism that comes from online multiplayer games, where short typed compliments are common. I have not found a documented first use, so I leave the date out.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between WP and GG?
GG means “good game” and is said about the whole match, usually at the end. WP means “well played” and can be said at any time, for a single move or for the match.
Can WP be sarcastic?
Yes. After a blunder, “wp” can mean the opposite. Look at the situation: if the player just made a mistake, a dry “wp” is probably a joke.
Does WP stand for WordPress on Instagram?
Sometimes, on web design and business accounts. In a gaming comment or DM it means well played. If the post is about websites, assume WordPress.
Should I reply to WP?
A short thanks or a return compliment is plenty. If you won, “wp” back is a good sporting move. If you lost, a rematch offer keeps the mood friendly.
