Slang meaning
What does drip mean?
Drip is slang for style: a look that is fashionable, expensive or confident. If someone has drip, their outfit stands out.
Updated 6 October 2026
Drip means style or swagger, especially fashionable or expensive clothes. “Got drip” is a compliment on a look.
What drip can mean
1. Style and swagger
The main sense: a standout outfit, jewellery or overall look. “Your drip is crazy” praises the whole presentation, not just the clothes. Wiktionary lists it as “style; swagger; fashionable and/or expensive clothing”.
2. Fashionable or expensive items
It can also mean the clothes themselves. “Showing off the new drip” points at the trainers, jacket or chain that make up the look, and often hints that they cost money.
3. Something that falls in drops
The ordinary word still exists, as in a leaking tap or a coffee drip. A slang reading is unlikely when the post is about plumbing or caffeine.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments
Under outfit and mirror photos: “the drip 🔥”, “he’s got drip”. It is a short compliment, often in capitals or with emoji.
Captions
People label their own look: “new drip” under photos of fresh trainers, or “drip check” as a prompt for others to rate an outfit.
Stories and DMs
A “drip check” sticker or poll invites friends to vote on an outfit. In DMs, “send drip pics” asks for a look at the outfit.
Brand accounts
Clothing and trainer brands use “drip” in captions for new drops. It can look forced if the brand is not otherwise casual.

How to reply to drip
Where it comes from
Wiktionary relates the slang to a verb sense, to have a superabundance of valuable things, as if someone’s look is dripping with it. It has been used widely in hip-hop and spread through social media. I have not traced a first use.
Questions people ask
Does drip mean expensive?
Not necessarily. Many people use it for a look that works, however cheap. A thrifted outfit can have drip. The expensive idea comes from the roots of the word, but it is not required.
What is a drip check?
It is a request to rate or admire an outfit, often through a Story poll or a mirror photo. Friends respond with a score or a quick compliment.
Is drip the same as rizz?
No. Drip is about how you dress and present yourself. Rizz is about charm and flirting with words. They can overlap, but someone can have one without the other.
Does drip have a bad meaning?
Not as a compliment. “Dripping” can be used critically in other contexts, but “got drip” is almost always praise.
