GF most often means girlfriend, but in food and café posts it usually means gluten-free.
What GF can mean
1. Girlfriend
The common social-media meaning. “Me and my gf at the beach” is a person’s romantic partner. It is typed as “gf” or “GF”, and its counterpart is BF, boyfriend.
2. Gluten-free
On cafés, bakeries, recipe pages and menus, GF marks food made without wheat gluten: “GF brownies”, “GF option available”. People who avoid gluten for health reasons rely on it, so it is worth reading carefully in that setting.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram captions and Stories
Couples tag each other with “my gf” in captions. Bakeries and restaurants use the other sense in highlight names and menu posts, often as “GF + vegan”.
Comments
“Is this GF?” under a cake photo is a customer asking about gluten. “Tag your gf” under a meme is a joke aimed at partners. The post tells you which.
DMs
“My gf says hi” or “bringing my gf” are about a partner. A café’s “do you have GF bread?” is a food question.

Questions people ask
Does GF mean girlfriend or gluten-free?
It depends where you see it. On a person’s post or photo it means girlfriend. On a menu, bakery page or recipe it means gluten-free. If you are unsure, ask what they mean before relying on it.
Can I trust “GF” on a menu for a coeliac diet?
Not on its own. If you have coeliac disease or a serious allergy, ask the business how the food is made and whether it is prepared separately. A label cannot tell you about cross-contamination.
What is the difference between GF and BF?
GF is girlfriend and BF is boyfriend. BFF, with the extra F, means “best friends forever”, so it is not a romantic label.
Does GF mean anything else online?
Now and then, depending on the community, but on Instagram and Facebook the two senses above, girlfriend and gluten-free, cover almost every case you will meet.
