L4L means “like for like”: I’ll like your posts if you like mine. It is a likes-trading request.
What L4L can mean
1. Like for like
A swap offer. The person likes some of your posts and asks you to do the same for theirs, hoping for a quick bump in numbers. It is closely related to F4F (follow for follow), C4C (comment for comment) and S4S (shoutout for shoutout).
2. A sign of a growth-chasing account
Seeing L4L in a bio or in comments usually tells you the account is chasing numbers. Likes gained this way come from people who may not care about the content, so they say little about real interest.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments
Typically a short line left on someone’s recent photo: “l4l?” or “nice pic, l4l.” Business owners often see it from accounts they don’t know, and many such comments come from accounts that behave like bots.
Hashtags and bios
Appears as #l4l, sometimes alongside #f4f or #follow4follow, in the caption or the bio. It is an old habit on the platform and tells people which kind of account you are.
DMs
A message such as “l4l?” sent to many people at once is a common pattern for spam. If it comes from someone you know, they are probably joking or trying to be friendly.

How to reply to L4L
Questions people ask
Does L4L actually grow an account?
It can lift the like count for a short while, but those likes come from people who are not interested in your content. Likes that come from interest, such as saves and replies, tell you more about your audience.
Is L4L against Instagram’s rules?
Meta’s rules cover spam and fake engagement, and mass-trading likes with accounts you don’t know sits close to that. The risk is higher with bots or tools that do it for you, so check the current Instagram Help Center before relying on it.
What is the difference between L4L, F4F and S4S?
L4L swaps likes, F4F swaps follows, C4C swaps comments and S4S swaps shoutouts. All of them are exchanges that aim at numbers, and the shoutout swap is the only one with a real chance of reaching new people.
Should a business account answer L4L comments?
Usually not. Most are from accounts with no connection to your customers. Ignore them, or hide the comment if it looks like spam. A friendly, short reply is fine if the person seems real.
