Slang meaning
What does FYP mean?
On TikTok, the FYP is the For You page: the feed of recommended videos that opens when you launch the app. People say it about Instagram too, so “this was on my fyp” just means an app showed them the post without them searching for it.

The For You page: TikTok's feed of videos picked for you, and by extension any app's stream of suggested posts.
What FYP can mean
1. TikTok's For You feed
The original meaning. TikTok's main feed, labelled For You, plays videos chosen by its recommendation system, many from accounts you don't follow. Every fyp is personal: two friends on the same app can see completely different videos, which is why “what's your fyp like right now?” is a real question.
2. Any feed of suggested posts
The word has spread past TikTok. On Instagram, people say a Reel “landed on my fyp” when it turned up in the Reels tab, in Explore or as a suggested post, and the same goes for YouTube Shorts. In this loose sense fyp just means “what the algorithm is showing me.”
3. Final year project
At many universities, especially in Asia, FYP is the final year project: the big piece of independent work students finish before they graduate. A classmate asking you to fill in their FYP survey wants help with research, not views.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments on posts that spread
“back on my fyp” and “the fyp brought me here” turn up under videos that suddenly travel, including ones posted years ago. They tell the creator the post is reaching new people, and that strangers are about to join the comments.
Captions and hashtags
Creators add #fyp, #foryou and #foryoupage to captions hoping to reach that feed, often next to #viral. On an Instagram post, a stack of those tags usually means the video was first made for TikTok and reposted.
DMs and group chats
Friends send each other things “from my fyp,” and comparing feeds is half the fun: one person's is all cooking, another's is cats and car repairs. “my fyp is cursed today” means the app is serving up weird or upsetting videos.
Messages to small businesses
For a shop or creator, “saw you on my fyp” in a DM means a recommended post found someone new. It's worth asking which video they saw, because it shows you what is reaching people outside your followers.

How to reply to FYP
Where it comes from
The term comes from TikTok, whose main feed has been called For You since the app's early years. TikTok launched outside China in 2017 and absorbed Musical.ly in 2018, and as it grew, FYP and #fyp became everyday words. When Instagram launched Reels in 2020, people brought the term with them.
Questions people ask
Does adding #fyp help a video get more views?
There's little reason to think so. TikTok's own explanation of its feed puts the weight on how viewers behave, such as whether they watch a video to the end, and a tag shared by millions of posts tells it almost nothing about yours. A clear topic and a strong first second do more.
What does “on my fyp” mean on Instagram?
That Instagram showed them the post without them looking for it: in the Reels tab, in Explore or as a suggested post in the feed. People borrow the TikTok word because it's quicker than naming the exact spot.
Why is my fyp suddenly full of one topic?
Because you lingered. Watching a few videos on a topic to the end, rewatching one or sharing it tells the app you're interested, so it sends more. Tapping “Not interested” and scrolling past quickly thins it out again, on TikTok and on Instagram.
What's the difference between FYP and Following?
On TikTok, the Following feed shows posts from accounts you follow, while For You is mostly from people you don't. If you want to see your friends' posts rather than strangers', Following is the place to look.
