Updated 6 October 2026
QOTD means “question of the day”: a single prompt posted for followers to answer, sometimes “quote of the day.”
What QOTD can mean
1. Question of the day
The usual meaning. The post is the question and the replies are the content: “QOTD: what’s the first thing you cook when you’re home alone?” It is a cheap way for an account to start a conversation and see who is listening.
2. Quote of the day
Some accounts use the same letters for a line they want to share, especially motivational or book accounts. The context tells you which: if there is a question mark, it is the question, and if the line is in quotation marks, it is the quote.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram captions
Book, fitness and pet accounts often end a caption with “QOTD:” and a question related to the photo, so the comments fill with answers instead of just hearts.
Instagram Stories
A question sticker or a text slide marked QOTD asks followers to reply. The answers arrive as replies the account can screenshot and share.
Facebook groups and Pages
Admins post a daily question to keep a group active: favourite local café, best film for a rainy night. It is a habit that works because it is quick to answer.

How to reply to QOTD
Questions people ask
Is it QOTD or Q.O.T.D.?
Both are understood, and most people write QOTD with no full stops. Capitals are common because it works as a label at the start of a post, the way a heading would.
How is QOTD different from POTD or OOTD?
The letters change the subject. OOTD is “outfit of the day,” a photo of what you are wearing, and POTD is usually “photo of the day.” QOTD is the one that asks for words back.
Does a daily question actually help a business account?
It makes it easy for followers to say something, and comments are a visible sign that people are engaged. Questions that are personal and easy to answer, with no right answer, do better than quizzes. Keep it about your followers’ lives, not your own product.
Should I answer every reply to my own QOTD?
Answering a few early ones in the comments helps the thread feel alive. You do not need to reply to all of them, and a thread with dozens of answers is fine to leave.
