Slang meaning
What does OP mean?
OP most often means “original poster”: the person who wrote the post everyone is commenting under. In games it means “overpowered,” something too strong to be fair, and anime fans use OP for a series' opening song.
Updated 6 October 2026
Usually “original poster,” whoever started a post or thread; in gaming it's “overpowered,” and in anime an opening song.
What OP can mean
1. Original poster, or the original post
In a thread, OP is whoever wrote the post at the top. “OP, did you ever find the cat?” speaks straight to them, and “OP said further down that it's sold” refers to them. It can mean the post itself too: “read the OP again.” Reddit leans on it so heavily that it tags the poster's own comments with a small OP label.
2. Overpowered, in games and beyond
Gamers call a weapon, character or tactic OP when it's too strong for the game to stay fair. The usual fix is a nerf, an update that weakens it, which is why “OP pls nerf” became a running joke. Outside games, OP is plain praise: a bowler on form, a sharp outfit or a very good samosa can all be OP.
3. An anime opening song
Anime fans call a series' opening theme the OP and its closing theme the ED, for ending. “OP 2 is the best one” compares a show's opening songs across seasons, and fan lists rank the best OPs of the year. Under an anime edit or a music Reel, this is nearly always the meaning.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Facebook groups
Large local, hobby and advice groups use OP constantly, because threads run to hundreds of comments and people need a quick way to point back to whoever asked. Facebook also marks the poster's own comments with an “Author” label, which helps everyone see what OP has already answered.
Meme reposts on Instagram
When a meme page reposts someone's video, comments such as “credit the OP” or “who's the OP?” are asking for the original creator. Here OP means whoever made the content first, not the account that reposted it.
Gaming clips and streams
Under a clip of a new character, build or strategy, “this is so OP” is praise and complaint at once: it works, and it feels unfair to play against. When an update weakens it, the comments fill with players mourning that it's “not OP anymore.”
Sports and food comments
OP has spread into everyday praise. A cricket fan writes “that yorker was OP,” and a recipe page's followers call a dish OP. In Hinglish comments, “bhai OP” means the same thing: brilliant, unbeatable.

How to reply to OP
Where it comes from
The “original poster” sense comes from internet forums and message boards, where every thread starts with one post and the replies stack beneath it. Reddit, where OP is everywhere, helped make it familiar far beyond forums. The “overpowered” sense grew up separately in online gaming, where players argue constantly about which characters and weapons need balancing.
Questions people ask
Is OP the same as opp?
No. OP, with one P, is the original poster or something overpowered. Opp, with two, comes from drill and rap slang and means an opponent or enemy, as in “the opps.” Calling someone an opp is hostile; calling something OP is usually a compliment.
What does “OP delivers” mean?
It's a Reddit phrase for when the original poster follows through: they promised a photo of the finished cake or an update after the date, and they posted it. When OP never comes back, commenters grumble that they didn't deliver.
What do nerf and buff mean next to OP?
They're what game makers do about balance. A nerf weakens something that's too strong, and a buff strengthens something that's too weak. Players who love an OP weapon dread the nerf, and players who keep losing to it beg for one.
Who is OP in an Instagram comment section?
Usually the account that made the post. On reposted memes and videos it can mean the original creator instead, which is why people ask “who's the OP?” when a clip has been shared without credit.
Can OP mean something else entirely?
Yes, offline. In Indian hospitals OP means outpatient, as in OP ticket or OP timings. Police and military posts use op for an operation, and booksellers use OP for out of print. The setting makes the meaning clear.
