Facebook cover photo size
Make your Facebook cover photo 851 × 315 pixels. Meta says a Page cover loads fastest as an sRGB JPG of that size under 100 KB, and it must be at least 400 × 150. Facebook shows the same file at different shapes on phones and computers, so expect the edges to be cut.

What Meta’s help centre says
Meta’s guidance is written for Facebook Pages. A cover must be at least 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall, and it loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that is 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and under 100 kilobytes. If the cover is mostly a logo or text, Meta suggests a PNG may give a better result. Its separate article on personal profile covers gives one size rule: the image has to be at least 720 pixels wide.
| Device | How Meta describes the cover |
|---|---|
| Computers | Left-aligned with a full bleed, at a 16:9 aspect ratio |
| Mobile devices | Left-aligned with a full bleed, at a 2.4:1 aspect ratio; the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 pixels |
| Both | At least 400 × 150 px; loads fastest as an 851 × 315 sRGB JPG under 100 KB |
Third-party guides such as Sprout Social and Hootsuite give one Facebook cover size, 851 × 315, without separate figures for personal profiles and Pages. That makes 851 × 315 the starting point for either.
Why the display sizes don’t agree
Look this up and you will find two sets of numbers. Meta’s help centre now describes the cover by its shape: 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on mobile. Many guides, including Hootsuite’s October 2026 update, still list fixed display sizes of 820 × 312 pixels on computers and 640 × 360 pixels on phones.
Both sets of figures agree on the part that matters. You upload one file at about 2.7:1, and the screens they describe show a squarer shape than that, so the sides get trimmed. At 16:9, a cover 315 pixels tall keeps only about 560 of its 851 pixels of width, roughly two-thirds. At 2.4:1 it keeps about 756, and at 820 × 312 almost all of it.
So follow the upload size every source agrees on, 851 × 315, and design for the crop rather than for one display size. After saving, look at the cover on a phone and on a computer, because each shows a different slice.
Where to put text and logos
- Keep words, logos and faces in the middle of the image, well clear of both side edges.
- Leave the lower left free. The profile picture sits over that part of the cover, about 40 pixels deep on mobile according to Meta.
- Use large, simple lettering. On a phone the whole cover is a short band across the top of the profile, and small text becomes unreadable.
- Fill the edges with something that can be lost, such as a plain colour, a texture or sky.
- Don’t put a phone number or web address at the far right or left, where a crop can cut it in half.
Tip: When you set a new cover, Facebook lets you drag it to reposition it before saving. That rescues a photo, but a cover designed for the crop needs little or no adjusting.
Exporting the file
- Set the canvas to 851 × 315 pixels before you add anything.
- Zoom your design down to phone size on screen to judge whether the lettering is still readable.
- Save a photo as an sRGB JPG and aim for under 100 KB, the size Meta says loads fastest.
- Save a cover that is mostly lettering or a logo as a PNG, which keeps edges crisp.
- If the result looks soft on a high-resolution screen, try the same shape at double size, 1702 × 630, and compare the two.
Facebook group and event covers use different shapes from Page and profile covers, so reusing this file there leads to a different crop. Their own guides cover those sizes.

Questions people ask
What size should a Facebook cover photo be?
851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. Meta’s help centre says a Page cover loads fastest at that size as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, and that it must be at least 400 × 150 pixels.
Is the right size 820 × 312 or 851 × 315?
Upload at 851 × 315; that is the size Meta says loads fastest. 820 × 312 is a display size that many guides give for computers. Meta’s help centre now describes the display by shape instead, 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on mobile, so neither display figure is worth designing to.
Why is my Facebook cover cut off on my phone?
Your phone shows the cover at a different shape from the file, so part of the width is trimmed, and Meta says the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 pixels on mobile. Move text and logos toward the centre and away from the lower left.
Should a Facebook cover be a JPG or a PNG?
A JPG suits photos: Meta says an sRGB JPG under 100 KB loads fastest. For a cover that is mostly a logo or text, Meta suggests a PNG, which avoids the smudgy edges JPG compression can leave around lettering.
Is a personal profile cover the same size as a Page cover?
Meta’s size and shape figures are for Pages. For a personal profile its help centre gives one rule: the cover has to be at least 720 pixels wide. Third-party guides give a single 851 × 315 size for both, which clears that minimum, so use it for a profile cover too and check how it looks once it is saved.
