Sleeping face: asleep, worn out or bored?

😴 shows a face fast asleep, eyes shut, often with a few Zs floating above it. People send it to say they are going to bed, that they are exhausted, or, less kindly, that something is so dull it is putting them to sleep. The words around it tell you which.

😴

Asleep or nearly there: goodnight, I’m exhausted, or “this is so boring it’s sending me to sleep.”

What 😴 can mean

1. Off to bed

The literal use, and the most common one in chats. “Night 😴” ends a late conversation; a lone 😴 at 1am means the sender is fading fast. It is gentle and final for the night, and the only reply it needs is “sleep well.”

2. Running on empty

😴 also means tired while still technically awake: after a night shift, a red-eye flight or a week of newborn wake-ups. “Worked a double, 😴 on my feet” is a status update, not a goodbye. Parents of new babies use it a lot, often with 🍼 or ☕.

3. Rest as a treat

In captions, sleep is often the happy ending. A lie-in, a Sunday nap, a cat flat out in a patch of sun, a hotel bed after a long trip: 😴 here means bliss, not exhaustion. It fits travel posts and cosy-home photos for exactly that reason.

4. Boring, snooze

Pointed at something else, 😴 is a review: “that meeting could have been an email 😴.” Football fans post it after a goalless draw, and it turns up under long ads and slow trailers. Under a friend’s post it says “yawn,” which only works if they know you’re joking. You’ll also see it with the slang “sleeping on,” meaning underrating: “everyone is sleeping on this album 😴.”

When someone sends you 😴

What it means in a DM

Most often it is a goodnight, or a sign the sender is about to drop off, so the chat is pausing, not ending badly. If it is the only reply to a story you told in the middle of the afternoon, it may be a tease that you went on a bit. Answer a goodnight with “sleep well, talk tomorrow”; answer a tease with a joke at your own expense.

Is it flirty?

Not on its own. 😴 is about sleep, not attraction. Still, someone who chats until they are half asleep and then signs off with “night 😴” is spending their last waking minutes on you. Add 😘, 🥰 or “sweet dreams” and it has tipped into flirting.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between 😴 and 😪?

😴 is fully asleep, often snoring. 😪 sleepy face is dozing, and the bubble at its nose comes from Japanese comics, where it shows a character nodding off. Because so many people read that bubble as a tear, 😪 often gets used for sadness, which makes 😴 the clearer way to say you’re tired.

Why do sleeping emojis have Zs?

Zs are an old comic-strip shorthand for snoring, because a drawn-out “zzz” sounds like someone breathing heavily in their sleep. 😴 borrows the idea, and 💤, whose emoji name is ZZZ, carries it on its own. Like 😴, a 💤 can mean either asleep or boring.

When was 😴 added?

In 2012, with Unicode 6.1. It wasn’t in the 2010 set taken from Japanese phones; it came later with other faces such as 😀, 😬 and 😕. That is why Unicode’s emoji list files it under Emoji 1.0 rather than with the original 2010 set.

Is it rude to answer someone with 😴?

Only if it lands on their effort. To “I’m off to bed,” it is a friendly goodnight. To a long voice note, a joke or a story about their day, it says “boring,” and even a friend may not take it as teasing. If you mean you’re tired, say so: “so sleepy 😴, can we talk tomorrow?”
