Smiling with a tear: what 🥲 really means
🥲 is a smile with a single tear rolling down: two feelings at once. People use it when they are proud or touched, and just as often when they are laughing through something painful, such as rent day or a freshly cracked phone screen. It is bittersweet rather than simply sad.
Updated 6 October 2026
Two feelings at once: touched or proud to tears, or smiling through something that hurts (“rent is due 🥲”).
What 🥲 can mean
1. Smiling through the pain
The most common use. 🥲 is the brave face for small disasters: “just paid for the car repair 🥲,” “the dog ate my headphones 🥲.” It says “this hurts, but I’m laughing about it.” It is close to 🙃, with less sarcasm and more resigned good humour.
2. Proud or touched
Happy tears. Parents post it under first-day-of-school photos, friends under graduation pictures, fans when a favourite band announces a reunion tour. The tear is joy mixed with something wistful: time passing, or a hard road that finally paid off.
3. Grateful and a bit emotional
“You remembered 🥲” or “this comment made my week 🥲” means a kindness landed harder than expected. It is a softer thank-you than ❤️, with a hint of “I might actually cry.”
4. Brave about a let-down
Sometimes it is a gentle way to accept bad news: “no worries, maybe next time 🥲” after a cancelled plan. The smile keeps things friendly while the tear admits it stings, so a little reassurance goes a long way.
When someone sends you 🥲
What it means in a DM
Read it as mixed feelings. After good news you shared, they are touched or proud of you. After their own bad news, they are joking to keep it light, so sympathy with a smile fits: “the car again? I’m sorry.” After you cancel plans, they are being nice about it, but they are a little disappointed, so suggest another day.
Is it flirty?
Not really. It can appear when someone is moved by a sweet message (“you’re going to make me cry 🥲”), which is a warm sign, but 🥲 carries emotion rather than attraction. Look for other signals before reading anything romantic into it.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between 🥲 and 🥹?
🥹 face holding back tears, added in 2021, is mostly about being moved: watery eyes at something sweet. 🥲 has an actual tear and a wider range, from pride to “this hurts.” Cute babies and kind words usually get 🥹; a bill you didn’t expect gets 🥲.
Is 🥲 the same as 😂?
No. 😂 face with tears of joy is laughter. 🥲 has one tear on a gentle smile, so it is emotional rather than amused. When something is funny and painful at once, people often send both: 😂 for the joke, 🥲 for the sting.
When was 🥲 added, and why do some people see a box?
It arrived in Emoji 13.0 in 2020, which makes it one of the newer faces. Phones that haven’t had a software update since then may show an empty box or a question mark instead, so on an old device the message can lose its point.
Can I use 🥲 when someone shares bad news?
Carefully. For small setbacks it reads as warm, wry sympathy. For serious news, such as a death or an illness, the smile can look out of place, and 😢, 🤍 or simply kind words are safer.
