The intended meaning. People sign off with “hugs 🤗” after a long chat, send it to a friend who passed an exam, or use it to welcome someone new to a group. It is warm and a little bouncy, the kind of hug that comes with a squeal. Older users tend to send it this way, often in thank-yous and good-morning messages on Facebook.
2. Jazz hands, yay and ta-da
Look closely and nobody is being hugged: there are just two open palms. So plenty of people, younger users especially, use 🤗 as jazz hands for excitement, “ta-da” or “guess what.” “Got the flat 🤗” is a celebration, not a request for comfort. When it arrives with good news, the sender wants you to cheer.
3. Comfort, with a caveat
“Sending hugs 🤗” is a common reply to bad news, and it is kindly meant. But the face is grinning, so under news of a death or a diagnosis it can look oddly cheerful. 🫂 people hugging, added in 2020, shows two figures in a real embrace and suits sad moments better, as do 🤍 or a few honest words.
4. The AI company’s logo
In tech circles 🤗 also stands for Hugging Face, the AI company and model-sharing site that took its name and logo from this emoji. In a developer’s bio or a thread about language models, it is a reference to the platform, not an offer of a hug.

The short name used in emoji lists, which comes from Unicode’s CLDR project, has been updated to “smiling face with open hands” to match the picture: a smiling face, two open palms, no arms around anyone. Apple’s keyboard still labels it hugging face, and how people use it hasn’t changed.
Is 🤗 a good emoji when someone is grieving?
It is well meant, but its big smile can feel out of place on news of a death or a serious illness. Try 🫂 or 🤍 with a few real words, such as “thinking of you, I’m here if you want to talk.” Keep 🤗 for comfort over smaller troubles, like a bad day or a missed train.
