Tips before you post

  1. Photograph the piece in daylight, near a window, with the canvas flat to the wall. Glare and a slanted angle are the most common reasons good paintings look flat online.

  2. Show the process. A carousel with the blank canvas, a mid-stage shot and the final piece gives your caption something to refer to and tends to hold people’s attention longer.

  3. Add the medium and size in the caption, for example ‘Gouache on paper, A4’. Buyers and other artists look for it, and it makes the post feel finished.

  4. Include a close-up of the brushwork or texture as the second slide. Detail shots show what a flat photo can’t.

  5. If you sell prints or originals, say so plainly in the caption or the first comment. A short ‘Available, message me’ is clearer than hinting.

  6. Tag the paint brands or paper makers you used only if you actually mean it. Followers can tell the difference between a genuine mention and a hopeful one.

Questions people ask

What is a good short caption for a painting?

‘My palette looks better than half my paintings’ works for a messy studio shot, and ‘Wet on wet, hoping for a happy accident’ suits a watercolour in progress. Short lines work best when the artwork is the star.

Should I explain what my painting means?

You can, but you don’t have to. Many artists share a line about the mood, the place or the materials and let viewers decide the rest. A short backstory often gets more replies than a long explanation.

What do I write for an unfinished painting?

Be honest about the stage. Something like ‘Underpainting stage, ugly and loved’ invites comments and encouragement, and it gives you an easy follow-up post when the piece is done.

How do I caption art I want to sell?

Give the title, the medium and the size, then say whether it is available. Keep the caption warm and short, and put price details in a message or a link so the post doesn’t read like an advert.
