Tips before you post

  1. A mysterious photo works because something is missing: a face turned away, a figure small in a big space, or light from only one side. Hide something on purpose.

  2. Shoot at blue hour or at night with one light source, such as a lamp, a window or a phone screen. Low light and shadows do most of the work.

  3. Keep the caption short or odd. A long explanation kills the mystery, so leave out the who, where and why.

  4. Use a carousel to tease. Show a detail first and a wider shot on the second slide, so people stop to work out how they connect.

  5. Do not use mystery to hint at something that is not true, such as a fake announcement. People who follow you will remember.

Ask people to comment CLUE

End your caption with a line like this:

“Comment CLUE and I'll send it to you in a DM.”

What they get

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What is a good mysterious caption for Instagram?

One that hints and does not explain. Pick a line that gives the viewer a question, such as a locked door or a missing detail, and let the photo supply half of the answer.

How do I take a mysterious photo?

Use low light, a silhouette, a turned head, fog or a window reflection. Cover part of the frame with a hat, hair, a doorway or shadow, so the viewer fills in the rest.

Should a mysterious caption be long or short?

Short. Fewer words leave more space for guessing. If you do write longer, end on an unanswered question rather than a full story.

Can I use these for a teaser or an announcement?

Yes, they suit a launch teaser, a new look or a surprise. Make sure there is a reveal soon after, so the mystery has a payoff and people come back to see it.
