Video background remover

Choose a clip of up to 20 seconds with a person in it, and this tool replaces everything behind them with a green screen, a solid colour, a blur of the original scene or a picture you pick. It runs on your own device with MODNet, an open matting model, and records a new video with the original sound. Your video never leaves this page.

How it works

  1. 1Choose a short clip

Pick a video of up to 20 seconds with a person in it, as MP4, MOV or WebM. It opens in this page from your device; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2Pick the new background

Green screen for keying out later, a flat colour, a blur of the original scene, or your own photo. Preview one frame first if you want to check the cut-out before the full run.

  3. 3Every frame gets a mask

MODNet decides, pixel by pixel, how much of each frame is the person. It uses your graphics chip through WebGPU; without WebGPU, every other frame is analysed on the processor.

  4. 4Recorded with its sound

The clip then plays once at normal speed while each new frame is drawn and recorded together with the original audio. Download the result and post it.

What it cuts out well, and what trips it up

MODNet is a portrait matting model: it was trained on people, so it is at its best on the clips creators film most. A talking head at a desk, a presenter pointing at the camera, a dance or workout filmed from a few steps away. Hair and shoulders come out with soft, natural edges rather than a hard cardboard outline, because the model gives every pixel a share of foreground instead of a yes or no.

It struggles where the person is not the clear subject. A product held out at arm’s length can be partly dropped, a pet on its own is treated as background, and someone tiny in a wide shot may vanish. Fast movement that smears into motion blur, and clothes that match the wall behind, also make the edge wander.

Flicker smoothing deals with the small frame-to-frame shimmer that every per-frame cut-out has. Each mask is blended with the one before it where the change is small, and passed straight through where the change is large, so a still shoulder stops buzzing while a waving hand doesn’t leave a ghost behind it.

Tip: Film against a plain wall with light on your face rather than behind you. Good contrast between you and the background does more for the edge than any setting here.

Which background to choose

BackgroundGood forWorth knowing
Green screenEditing later in CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci ResolveUses chroma green (#00B140) and tighter edges, so a chroma key removes it cleanly
ColourBrand-coloured talking heads and quote ReelsAny colour from the picker; white and black work for product-style shots
BlurKeeping the setting but hiding a messy roomA soft blur of the original frame, like a portrait mode for video
ImagePutting yourself in front of a slide, a photo or a placeYour picture is scaled to fill the frame; it stays still while you move

Browsers can’t record see-through video, so there is no transparent export. If you want to move the cut-out around, add text behind it or layer it over other footage, export on the green screen and use your editor’s chroma key effect. Once a clip is analysed you can switch backgrounds and export again: only the real-time recording runs a second time.

Limits, speed and privacy

  • Clips can be up to 20 seconds long. Every frame is analysed and its mask kept in memory until the recording is done; a 20-second clip at 30 frames a second is 600 masks.
  • Anything above 1080p is scaled down to fit 1920 × 1080, in either orientation. Smaller videos keep their size.
  • With WebGPU, the analysis runs at roughly 10 to 15 frames a second on a recent laptop, so a 10-second clip is ready in well under a minute. Without WebGPU every other frame is analysed and it takes several times longer.
  • The recording plays the clip once in real time. Keep the tab in front and, on a phone, the screen on: browsers stop drawing video in background tabs, and the tool throws that attempt away rather than give you a frozen video.
  • Chrome, Edge and Safari save an MP4. Firefox can only record WebM, which most editors open but you may need to convert before posting.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The model downloads once from Hugging Face and your browser keeps it for next time.

Questions people ask

Can I download the video with a transparent background?

No. The video recorder built into browsers doesn’t keep transparency, so the tool doesn’t pretend to. Choose the green screen instead and remove it in your editor with a chroma key: CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro all have one.

Why is there a 20-second limit?

Every frame goes through the model on your device, and the masks stay in memory until the recording finishes. Twenty seconds keeps that within what a phone or an ordinary laptop can hold. For a longer clip, split it into parts in your phone’s editor and run each one.

Does it work on a phone?

It works in recent mobile browsers, but expect it to be slower than on a laptop, and use Wi-Fi for the first run because the model is about 26 MB. Keep the tab open and the screen on until the video is ready, since the last step records in real time.

Will it remove the background behind a product or a pet?

Not reliably. The model is trained to find people, so a product on a table or a dog on its own is usually treated as background. A person holding a product close to their body is normally kept, product included.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read by your browser, the model runs on your graphics chip or processor, and the new file is made in the page. Nothing about the video or its sound is sent to DMFast or anyone else.
