Auto reframe for vertical video
Drop in a landscape clip of up to 2 minutes and this tool finds the person in it, then moves a 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1 window so they stay in frame, with smooth camera moves and a clean jump at every cut. Detection runs on your own device, so the video never leaves this page.

How it works
1Choose a landscape video
Any clip up to 2 minutes, as MP4, MOV or WebM. A dashed window shows the shape you picked over the video straight away.
2Track the subject
D-FINE nano, a small open detector, looks for people (and 79 other kinds of everyday object) in two to four frames a second, while a quick frame comparison spots hard cuts.
3Check it and adjust
Play or scrub to watch the window follow. Change the shape or how the camera moves, or click someone to follow them instead; it updates at once, with no second analysis.
4Export with sound
The clip plays once in real time while the crop is recorded at its own resolution, together with the original audio. Then download it and post.
How the crop decides where to go
On every checked frame the tool picks a subject: by default the largest person in shot, and only when there is no person, the largest object. A new person has to be clearly bigger, by about a third, before the crop switches to them, so two people of similar size don’t make it flick back and forth. Click someone in the preview and it locks onto them instead, tracking them forwards and backwards from the moment you clicked.
The window aims at the upper part of a person, roughly the face in a head-and-shoulders shot and the chest in a full-length one, because that is where viewers look. It never leaves the frame, so near an edge the person sits off-centre rather than showing black bars.
| Camera | Moves when the person drifts | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Steady | More than 16% of the crop’s width | A locked-off tripod that glides only when you move across the room |
| Balanced | More than 9% | An operator who follows walks and big gestures |
| Follow | More than 5% | A handheld camera that keeps you centred, good for dance and sport |
Moves are smoothed in both directions over the whole clip, so the camera starts turning a fraction before the person moves rather than lagging behind them, and never overshoots. At a hard cut the smoothing restarts: the window jumps to the new shot instead of panning slowly across the edit.
Output size, and why it may be smaller than 1080 × 1920
The export keeps the crop at the source’s own pixels and never enlarges it, because enlarging adds file size without adding detail. A 1080p landscape video holds a 9:16 slice 608 pixels wide, so that is what you get; Instagram scales it up to fill the screen. For a sharp 1080 × 1920 Reel, film in 4K.
| Source | 9:16 | 4:5 | 1:1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 (720p) | 406 × 720 | 576 × 720 | 720 × 720 |
| 1920 × 1080 (1080p) | 608 × 1080 | 864 × 1080 | 1080 × 1080 |
| 3840 × 2160 (4K) | 1080 × 1920 | 1536 × 1920 | 1920 × 1920 |
Tip: Leave room around yourself when you film for both shapes: stand near the middle and keep gestures within shoulder width, and the 9:16 crop never has to cut off a hand.
Limits and privacy
- Clips can be up to 2 minutes. The export plays the clip once at normal speed, so a 90-second video takes 90 seconds to record; keep the tab in front, because browsers stop drawing video in background tabs.
- With WebGPU, tracking usually takes less time than the clip lasts. Without WebGPU it runs on the processor and takes several times longer, up to about a second per checked frame on a busy machine.
- It follows bodies, not voices. In a two-person conversation it stays on the larger person unless you click the other one; it can’t tell who is speaking.
- Chrome, Edge and Safari save an MP4. Firefox can only record WebM.
- Your video is never uploaded. The detector downloads once from Hugging Face and the runtime from a public CDN, and your browser keeps both.
Questions people ask
How is this different from cropping in my phone’s editor?
A normal crop is fixed: if you walk to the side of the frame, you walk out of the shot. Here the window moves with you, holding still while you stay put and gliding when you move, and it jumps cleanly at each cut. It is the same idea as the auto reframe features in desktop video editors.
Can I choose who the crop follows?
Yes. Pause on a moment where the person is visible and click them. The crop locks onto that person from then on, and backwards to the start. If they leave the shot for more than a couple of seconds, it picks up the largest person of the same kind again.
What if nobody is detected?
If the detector finds no person or known object, the crop stays in the centre. You can still click a spot in the preview to place the window there by hand before you export.
Will it work on a video that is already vertical?
A 9:16 video is already the right shape for Reels, so there is nothing to crop to 9:16. You can still make a 4:5 or square version from it, and the crop follows the person up and down instead of side to side.
Is the video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser plays the video, the detector runs in the page on your graphics chip or processor, and the new file is recorded on your device. DMFast never receives the video or its sound.
