Plan your Instagram grid before you post
Add up to 30 images, drag them into the order you want and see how they sit three across, in tall or square tiles. Your order is remembered by file name on this device, and you can download the plan as a PNG. Nothing is uploaded: the images stay in this tab.
How it works
1Add your images
Choose up to 30 JPEG, PNG or WebP files, or drop or paste them. Each is cropped from the middle into a tile. They open in this tab and are not sent anywhere.
2Pick the tile shape
Choose taller 3:4, 4:5 or square. Meta doesn’t publish the tile shape, so all three are settings. The notes under the grid tell you how much of the selected image the tile cuts off.
3Drag into order
Drag a tile with a mouse, or select it and use the First, Earlier, Later and Last buttons. On the keyboard, the arrow keys move between tiles and Alt with an arrow moves one.
4Download the plan
The PNG is 1,080 px wide with three columns and a thin gap, with position numbers if you leave them on. Close the tab and the order comes back when you add the same files.
Why the tile shape is a setting
Instagram’s profile grid used to show square tiles. We could not find a page where Meta states the shape it uses now. Sprout Social’s image-size guide (updated 11 May 2026, opened 7 October 2026) lists the grid view as 1012 × 1350 pixels, a 3:4 shape, and our grid thumbnail guide collects the other reports. That is a third party’s measurement, so the tool starts at 3:4 and labels it approximate. If your own profile looks different, switch to 4:5 or square.
| Your image | In a 3:4 tile | In a square tile |
|---|---|---|
| 3:4 (1080 × 1440) | All of it | The middle 1080 × 1080; an eighth is cut from the top and from the bottom |
| 4:5 (1080 × 1350) | The middle 1012 × 1350 | The middle 1080 × 1080 |
| 1:1 (1080 × 1080) | The middle 810 × 1080 | All of it |
The sums are plain geometry: a tile shows the part of the image that fits its shape from the middle, and nothing is stretched. When you select a tile, the tool says what share of your own image is cut, so you can see whether a face or a line of text is at risk.
Order, and how the plan is saved
Instagram lists the newest post first, starting at the top left, so position 1 in the plan is the post you publish last. To build the grid you see, publish from the last position backwards. Turn the numbers on and they show the order of the plan, not a posting schedule.
The order and your settings are saved in this browser’s local storage, which is a small file kept on your device. The images are not saved, so a reopened tab starts empty. Add the same files again and any with a saved name go back to the saved order, then the rest follow. If your browser blocks storage, the tool still works and tells you it can’t remember. “Clear all” also forgets the saved order.
Using the plan well
- Look at rows, not single tiles: three tiles that sit next to each other should work together in colour and subject.
- Check faces and text against the crop of the tile shape you chose before you export.
- Compare 3:4 and square if you are unsure which your profile shows. Open your own profile next to the preview and pick the one that matches.
- Use the PNG to agree a grid with a client before anything is scheduled.
The tool plans only the images. It does not know your pinned posts, Reels covers or how Instagram will treat a post. The PNG carries a small strip saying it is a mock-up, not a real profile.
Sources, and what we could not confirm
- Sprout Social, social media image sizes guide (sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-image-sizes-guide), updated 11 May 2026, opened 7 October 2026: reports a 3:4 grid view of 1012 × 1350 pixels, which is the tool’s starting tile shape.
- Our Instagram grid thumbnail size guide (/sizes/instagram-grid-thumbnail-size): the other reports of the grid crop and how each post shape sits in a tile. See the guide for its check date.
We found no Meta page that gives the tile shape, so all three shapes are settings and none is stated as fact. The tool does not know about pinned posts, or whether Instagram changes the grid again.
Questions people ask
What shape are Instagram profile grid tiles?
Meta doesn’t publish it. Sprout Social’s guide, updated 11 May 2026, reports a 3:4 grid view of 1012 × 1350 pixels, and older profiles used squares. The tool lets you choose 3:4, 4:5 or square and labels the choice approximate. Match it to what your own profile shows.
Does the tool remember my grid?
It remembers the order by file name, plus the tile shape, background and numbers setting, in this browser. It does not keep the images. Add the same files later and they return to your saved order. If storage is blocked, it tells you it can’t remember.
How do I reorder on a phone?
Tap a tile to select it, then use the First, Earlier, Later or Last buttons under the grid. Dragging works with a mouse or pen, not by touch, because a touch drag would fight with scrolling the page.
How many images can I add?
Up to 30, each up to 40 MB. They are kept at a size that suits a 1,080 px wide plan, which keeps the page light on a phone. Remove one to add another once you reach 30.
Are my images uploaded?
No. They open and are drawn in this tab, and the PNG is made on your device. Only the file names, order and settings go into this browser’s local storage, and nothing is sent to DMFast.
