Invisible text
Instagram caption spacing that survives posting
To keep a gap between paragraphs in an Instagram caption, put an invisible character on the empty line. The Braille blank (U+2800) is the usual choice: it looks empty but isn’t a space, so the tidying that removes empty lines leaves it alone. Copy a spacer below; each one is named with its code point.

Ready-made lines for bios and captions
Dashed boxes mark the invisible characters. They are copied with the line.
Why Instagram eats your gaps
Instagram doesn’t publish the rules it uses to tidy a caption, but creators and line-break tools describe the same pattern. Most line breaks you type are kept. Spaces at the end of a line are trimmed, runs of spaces are squeezed into one, and a line with nothing on it can be dropped, which glues two paragraphs together. A break typed straight after a space is especially likely to go. Bios get the same treatment.
So the fix is to make sure no line is truly empty. A Braille blank on the empty line is a real character, which leaves a clean-up step nothing to strip, and it still shows as blank space.
Spacing a caption, step by step
- Write the caption with an empty line between paragraphs, in the app or in a notes app.
- Delete any space at the end of a line. Phone keyboards add one after a predicted word, and it is easy to miss just before you press return.
- Paste one Braille blank (U+2800) on each empty line. Or copy a whole gap line from the first set, paste it at the end of a paragraph and carry on typing.
- Keep the opening line for words. The feed shows only the first line or two before “more”, so a gap at the very top wastes the part people actually see.
- Post, then open the post and read it through. If a gap has closed, tap the three dots on the post, choose Edit and put a blank back where it went missing.
Tip: For a caption you reuse, such as a weekly menu or a price list, keep the spaced-out version in your notes and paste it whole. The blanks travel with the text, so the gaps come along.
Which spacer for which job
| Job | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A gap between paragraphs | One Braille blank on the empty line | It isn’t white space, so trimming passes over it |
| A gap people can see | A dot line, such as · or ⋮ | Nothing to strip, and it looks deliberate: the old dot method |
| Hashtags set apart from the words | Two or three gap lines, then the tags | Tags still count, and still show once someone taps “more” |
| An indent, or a line nudged towards the middle | A run of Braille blanks | Each is roughly a letter wide, but screens differ, so exact centring isn’t possible |
| Wider gaps between emoji | One or two Braille blanks | Runs of ordinary spaces get squeezed; a Braille blank is not a space |
| Breaks in a bio | Return between lines, and a blank only where a gap is needed | Every blank comes out of the bio’s 150 characters |
What we checked, and what we couldn’t
We ran every character on this page through two clean-up steps that websites and apps commonly use: JavaScript’s trim(), which strips white space from both ends of a piece of text, and a pattern that squeezes any run of white space (\s+) into one ordinary space. The test used Node.js 24 and its Unicode 16.0 data, on 6 October 2026.
- The Braille blank (U+2800) came through both untouched. Unicode classes it as a symbol, the Braille cell with no dots raised, and not as a space or as a character software may ignore.
- The Hangul fillers (U+3164 and U+FFA0) also came through, but Unicode lists them as default-ignorable, which lets software hide them. A gap built from them can shrink to nothing on some phones.
- The zero-width space (U+200B) came through and is default-ignorable too. It takes no room at all, so a line holding only that may look like no line.
- Every true space, from the ordinary space to the em space (U+2003) and the no-break space (U+00A0), was cut from the ends and squeezed in the middle: two em spaces in a row came out as one ordinary space. That is why the sets here hold no spaces at all.
What we couldn’t check is Instagram’s own code. Meta doesn’t document it and it can change with any app update, so look at each post once it is live and treat this method as a starting point, not a promise.
What invisible spacing costs
- Room. Captions stop at 2,200 characters and bios at 150, and each blank counts like a letter.
- Listening. Each screen reader decides for itself whether to say anything for a blank, so a stack of gap lines can become a run of odd pauses for someone listening.
- Copying. Blanks travel with the text. If someone copies your caption into a search box or a document, the invisible characters come too.
- Hashtags and words. A blank inside a word or a hashtag splits it, which can cut a tag short. Keep blanks on lines of their own or between words.
Questions people ask
Why does Instagram remove my line breaks?
Usually it keeps the break but drops what looks empty: a blank line between paragraphs, or a break that follows a trailing space. Give each empty line a Braille blank (U+2800), delete spaces at the ends of lines, and check the post once it is live.
What is the invisible character people use for Instagram spacing?
Usually U+2800, the Braille pattern blank: a Braille cell with none of its dots raised. It shows as empty space, but software treats it as a symbol rather than a space, so common clean-up steps leave it in place.
How do I add spacing to my Instagram bio?
Edit your profile and press return in the bio to start a new line. For an empty line between two parts, put a Braille blank on it. Each blank uses one of the bio’s 150 characters, so most bios can only spare a gap or two.
Can I centre text in an Instagram caption?
Not truly. Captions have no alignment setting, and lines in English start at the left edge. A run of Braille blanks can push a short line towards the middle, but screens differ in width, so it will sit off-centre on many phones.
Why do the spaces between my emoji shrink?
Runs of ordinary spaces get squeezed into one when the caption is saved. Put one or two Braille blanks between the emoji instead. They are not spaces, so clean-up aimed at spaces leaves them alone.
Are dot lines better than invisible ones?
They trade looks for certainty. A full stop or middle dot on its own line is visible, which some people find untidy, but a line holding a dot is never mistaken for an empty one. A Braille blank looks cleaner; check the post once to be sure the gaps held.
