Phone symbols for calls, contacts and captions

โ˜Ž and ๐Ÿ“ž are the phone symbols people copy most: the first is a text character that matches your font, the second an emoji picture. Tap any symbol below to copy it. The sets cover desk phones, mobiles, signal and battery icons, and the notes explain which ones flip into emoji and why a โ˜Ž in a bio doesnโ€™t make a number tappable.

Text phones and emoji phones

โ˜Ž (black telephone, U+260E) and โ˜ (white telephone, U+260F) are old desk phones, one filled in and one drawn in outline. Both have been in Unicode since the early 1990s and follow the colour and size of your text. โ˜Ž also has an emoji form, โ˜Ž๏ธ, so some apps swap it for a coloured picture. โ˜ has none and always stays text, which makes it the steadier choice for a line that must look the same on every phone.

๐Ÿ“ž telephone receiver, ๐Ÿ“ฑ mobile phone and most of their neighbours exist only as emoji. They arrived in 2010 with Unicode 6.0, the first large emoji release, which was built on the emoji Japanese mobile networks already used. That history explains such oddly specific members as ๐Ÿ“ณ vibration mode and ๐Ÿ“ด mobile phone off.

Getting a number people can tap

A โ˜Ž in your bio is decoration. Instagram treats a number typed into the bio as plain text rather than a link, so followers would have to copy it by hand. Business and creator accounts can instead add a phone number under Edit profile, in the contact options. It then appears as a Call button on the profile, or behind a general Contact button if you have added an email or an address as well, as long as contact details are set to display.

  • Write the number in international format, with + and the country code (+91 for India, +44 for the UK), so it works for followers in other countries.
  • Keep the digits plain. Styled digits such as ๐Ÿ— and ๐Ÿด are different characters from 9 and 8, so a copied number may not paste into a dialler correctly.
  • On a Facebook Page, the number belongs in the Pageโ€™s contact details, which is where visitors look for it.

Where phone symbols go wrong

  • Emoji switching. โ˜Ž and โœ‰ can show as text in one app and as coloured emoji in another. The โ˜Ž๏ธŽ and โœ‰๏ธŽ in the grid end in U+FE0E, a hidden code asking for the text look, which most apps respect and a few ignore.
  • New emoji. ๐Ÿ›œ wireless arrived in 2022 (Unicode 15.0) and ๐Ÿชซ low battery in 2021 (Unicode 14.0), so older phones may show boxes. ๐Ÿ“ถ and ๐Ÿ”‹ date from 2010 and are safe.
  • Look-alikes. โŒ• is officially a telephone recorder, but it looks like a magnifying glass, so most readers will take it for search rather than a phone.
  • Power marks. โป โผ โฝ and โพ are the standard power-button symbols from electrical equipment, added to Unicode in 2016 (version 9.0). โพ is the sleep symbol, which is why it looks like a moon.
  • Missing pictures. Unicode also has a clamshell mobile, touch-tone phones and receivers held in a left or right hand, taken from the old Wingdings and Webdings fonts, but support for them on phones is patchy, so they are not in the grid.

Tip: Screen readers announce symbols by name: โ˜Ž may be read as โ€œblack telephoneโ€ and โœ† as โ€œtelephone location signโ€. One symbol followed by the word Call or Text is clearer than a row of icons.

Questions people ask

What is the โ˜ symbol called?

White telephone, U+260F: the outline partner of โ˜Ž, black telephone (U+260E). Both have been in Unicode since the early 1990s. โ˜ has no emoji form, so unlike โ˜Ž it never turns into a coloured picture.

What does โ„ก mean?

It is the telephone sign, U+2121: the letters TEL fitted into one character, for use in front of a phone number. Depending on the font it shows as TEL in capitals or as Tel.

Can I make the phone number in my Instagram bio tappable?

Not in the bio text: a number typed there stays plain text. Business and creator accounts can add the number in the contact options under Edit profile, and it then shows as a button on the profile.

What does ๐Ÿ“ฒ mean?

Its Unicode name is mobile phone with rightwards arrow at left. People use it for an incoming call, for โ€œcall meโ€, or for sending something to a phone, such as an app download or a new wallpaper.

How do I type a phone symbol on my phone?

Search the emoji keyboard for phone to find ๐Ÿ“ž, ๐Ÿ“ฑ and โ˜Ž๏ธ. The text versions โ˜Ž๏ธŽ and โ˜ have no key, so copy one from this page and save it as a text replacement on an iPhone, or as a shortcut in Gboardโ€™s personal dictionary on Android.
