Crown symbols for kings, queens and names

The crown people paste most is ๐Ÿ‘‘, the crown emoji. For a crown in plain text, the chess king and queen stand in: โ™” and โ™š wear a small cross, โ™• and โ™› a ring of points. Tap any symbol below to copy it, along with royal emoji and frames for a name, and see which ones show as boxes on older phones.

Why text crowns are really chess pieces

๐Ÿ‘‘ is the emoji named crown (U+1F451). It came with Unicode 6.0 in 2010, the first big batch of emoji, and phones draw it as a small gold crown, often set with jewels. Being a picture, it keeps its own colours on any background, and each phone maker draws its own version.

The everyday symbol sets have no text crown of their own, so people borrow from the chess set that Unicode has included since the early 1990s. The king โ™” โ™š is topped with a small cross; the queen โ™• โ™› wears a coronet of points, usually with a ball on each tip. In the official names, โ€œwhiteโ€ means the outline piece and โ€œblackโ€ the filled one, after the two sides of a chessboard. All four take the colour and size of your text, so they sit beside a name without a bright emoji pulling the eye away from it.

At small sizes the queenโ€™s row of points reads as a crown more clearly than the kingโ€™s cross, so โ™› is the easier pick when you simply want a crown. โ™Ÿ, the pawn, is the only chess piece with an emoji form (since 2018), which is why it can turn into a picture while the kings and queens always stay text.

Royal emoji and the year each arrived

A phone draws only the emoji its software knows, and anything newer shows as an empty box. The crown itself is safe almost everywhere; the newest royals are the ones to check before you build a bio around them.

What a crown says in a comment

  • Praise. โ€œYou dropped this ๐Ÿ‘‘โ€ is a running joke that hands someone their crown back, usually after a sharp comeback, a big win or a great photo.
  • Best in show. Next to a dish, a product or a player, ๐Ÿ‘‘ marks the favourite or the champion, much as ๐Ÿ† does.
  • Birthdays. โ€œBirthday queen ๐Ÿ‘‘โ€ or โ€œbirthday king โ™šโ€ on the day is about as common as crowns get.
  • Self-titles. โ€œโ™› queen of the bake saleโ€ in a bio reads as confident when it is a little tongue in cheek, and as boastful when it isnโ€™t.
  • Gaming names. Clan and player names often put โ™š or โ™› inside brackets, as in ใ€โ™›ใ€‘, next to a clan tag.

Putting a crown beside your name

  • Use the name field or the bio. Handles allow only letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, so a crown in a username is rejected.
  • Keep the name itself in ordinary letters. People search for you by typing it normally, so let the crown sit beside the name rather than inside it.
  • One crown on each side is plenty. โ€œโ™› Asha โ™›โ€ reads as a frame; four crowns in a row read as clutter.
  • Frames from other scripts, such as ๊ง ๊ง‚ from Javanese, are popular in gaming names but are left out of the grid: a phone without a Javanese font shows boxes instead.

Tip: A screen reader may read โ™› by its name, so โ€œQueen โ™›โ€ can come out as โ€œQueen, black chess queenโ€. When the word queen is already there, the symbol adds nothing for a listener.

Questions people ask

Is there a crown symbol that isnโ€™t an emoji?

Not among the standard symbols most phones show. The text crowns people use are chess pieces: the king โ™” โ™š and the queen โ™• โ™›. They have been in Unicode since the early 1990s, take your textโ€™s colour and display on nearly every phone.

What does ๐Ÿ‘‘ mean in a comment or DM?

Almost always a compliment: you are royalty, the best, the winner. โ€œYou dropped this ๐Ÿ‘‘โ€ is the playful version. Under a product or a dish, it marks the favourite.

What is the difference between โ™• and โ™›?

Only the fill. โ™• is white chess queen (U+2655), drawn in outline, and โ™› is black chess queen (U+265B), filled in. Both are text, so the filled one simply looks bolder in a line of words.

How do I type a crown on my keyboard?

On a phone, search the emoji keyboard for crown to get ๐Ÿ‘‘. The chess crowns have no key, so copy โ™› from this page and save it as a text shortcut. In Microsoft Word on Windows, typing 265B and then pressing Alt+X turns the code into โ™›.

Why does ๐Ÿซ… show as a box?

Person with crown was added in 2021, in Unicode 14.0, so a phone running older software has no picture for it. ๐Ÿ‘‘ dates from 2010 and works almost everywhere, so use it when everyone needs to see the crown.
