Copy and paste arrow symbols
Tap an arrow to copy it. Plain arrows such as → ↓ ↳ are text and match your font, while ➡️ and ⬇️ are emoji that most phones draw inside a small square. The sets run from simple to bold, and the notes below explain which arrows switch to emoji by themselves and which point best at the link in your bio.

Text arrows, emoji arrows and the ones that switch
Most arrows here are plain text. They take the colour and weight of your font, so → sits inside a sentence without drawing attention. Emoji arrows such as ➡️ and ⬇️ are pictures that most phones draw inside a small square, like a button. They catch the eye, but a whole line of them looks heavy.
A few characters can be either. ↔ ↕ ↖ ↗ ↘ ↙ ↩ and ↪ have a text form and an emoji form, so the same arrow can look plain in one app and turn into a square in another. ← ↑ → ↓ never switch, because the emoji for left, up, right and down are separate characters: ⬅️ ⬆️ ➡️ ⬇️. Triangles behave the same way: ▶ can turn into a play button, while ► stays text. When a row of arrows has to match, build it from characters that never switch, or from emoji only.
Which arrow for which job
| Job | Try | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Point at the link in your bio | ↓ ⬇️ ⤵️ | On an Instagram profile the links sit under the bio text, so a down arrow at the end points straight at them. |
| A second line that belongs to the first | ↳ | The corner shape reads as “and under this,” which suits a location, a booking note or a reply. |
| Steps in a process | → ➝ ⟶ | Thin arrows sit inside a sentence without shouting. |
| Swipe prompt on a carousel | → ➡️ | Put it at the end of the caption’s first line, which shows before the rest is cut off. |
| Before and after | ⇢ ⇒ ↠ | A dashed or double arrow reads as a change from one state to the next. |
| Trips, swaps and two-way deals | ⇄ ⇆ ↔ | Paired arrows show movement both ways. |
| Restocks, repeats and replays | ↺ ↻ 🔁 | Circular arrows suggest something coming round again. |
| Bullets in a short list | ➤ ▸ › | Small heavy arrows line up neatly at the start of each line. |
Where arrows trip people up
- Links in captions. Instagram doesn’t make links in captions tappable, so an arrow under a caption can’t stand in for a link. That is why posts point people to the bio, or ask them to comment a word and receive the link by DM.
- Mixed styles. A bio with → on one line, ➤ on the next and ⬇️ at the end looks unplanned. Pick one family of arrow and reuse it.
- Long arrows on old phones. ⟵ ⟶ ⟷ come from a maths block added to Unicode in 2002, which some older fonts never covered. → is the safer choice for a bio that has to read on every device.
Tip: Screen readers may read each arrow out by name, so “Delhi → Goa” can come out as something like “Delhi, rightwards arrow, Goa.” Use arrows as decoration, and write “to” when the meaning matters.
Questions people ask
What is the ↳ arrow called?
Its Unicode name is downwards arrow with tip rightwards (U+21B3). People use it like an indent: the line after it belongs to the line above, as with a sub-point in a bio or a note under a product name.
Is there a left-pointing version of ➤?
Not in the same set. ➤ comes from Unicode’s Dingbats block, where every arrow from ➔ to ➾ points right or diagonally right. For a heavy left-pointing shape that shows on almost every phone, ◄ is the closest match.
How do I type an arrow on a keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 24, 25, 26 or 27 on the number pad for ↑ ↓ → ←. Mac users can open the Character Viewer with Control, Command and Space and search for arrow. On a phone, copy → from this page and keep it as a Text Replacement shortcut on an iPhone, or in your keyboard’s dictionary on Android.
Can I use arrows in my Instagram username?
No. Usernames can only contain letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Arrows work in your name field and bio, and in captions, comments and DMs.
Why does an arrow show as an empty box?
The phone has no font that includes that arrow. Most arrows on this page have been in Unicode since the early 1990s and are widely supported; boxes usually come from rarer arrows added later, or from very old phones.
