Aesthetic symbols: copy them by style

Aesthetic symbols are small text characters, such as ⋆ ˚ 「 」 ☾ and ☆彡, that give a bio or caption a particular look. What makes them work is choosing ones from the same style, so the sets below are sorted that way: soft and dreamy, clean and minimal, vintage and bookish, Y2K, and Japanese-inspired. Tap any symbol to copy it.

Pick a style first, then the symbols

On Instagram, “aesthetic” means a consistent look more than any particular character. Symbols from different styles clash: ☆彡 beside ❝ quote marks beside ⋆。˚ reads like three bios pasted together. Decide on the style, then use two or three symbols from its set over and over.

Laying out an aesthetic bio

  1. Write the bio in plain words first: who you are, what you post and where to start.
  2. Choose one frame for the line that matters most, such as 「 」 or ˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗, and use it once.
  3. Use one separator between facts, such as · or ⋆, and the same one on every line.
  4. Keep lines short. A bio holds 150 characters, and a long line wraps at a different point on a small phone.
  5. Save, then look at the bio on your phone in both light and dark mode before you move on.

Tip: Instagram lines a bio up on the left, so you can’t centre a line. Matching symbols at both ends, as in ⋆ new work ⋆, make it look balanced anyway.

Favourites we left out, and why

Some popular aesthetic characters come from scripts that need a font of their own. ꕤ is a syllable of the Vai script of Liberia, ꒰ ꒱ are radicals of the Yi script of south-west China, and the wings in 𓆩♡𓆪 are Egyptian hieroglyphs. We couldn’t confirm that iPhones ship fonts for these scripts, so they are not in the sets above. If you use them, check your profile on someone else’s phone, ideally both an iPhone and an Android.

Questions people ask

What does aesthetic mean on Instagram?

It usually means a deliberate, consistent look across a profile: colours, photo style and the way the bio and captions are written. Symbols are a small part of it. Using the same two or three everywhere does more than adding many different ones.

What does ☆彡 mean?

It is a shooting star. ☆ is the star, and 彡, a part of Chinese characters that stands for streaks or hair, draws its tail. The pairing comes from Japanese text decoration and suits playful, Y2K-style bios, as in “☆彡 new post.”

How can I type aesthetic symbols without copying them every time?

Save your favourite cluster as a text replacement. On an iPhone, go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Replacement, paste the symbols as the phrase and choose a short shortcut. On Android, add it to your keyboard’s personal dictionary with a shortcut. Typing the shortcut then brings up the whole cluster.

Are aesthetic symbols the same as fancy fonts?

No. Aesthetic symbols are decorations placed around your words. Fancy fonts swap the letters themselves for maths characters that look like bold or script letters, which screen readers struggle with and search may not match. Plain words framed by a few symbols give the look without those problems.

Which aesthetic symbols suit a business account?

The clean and minimal set: · │ ─ and a pair of brackets such as 「 」 or 【 】 for headings. They organise opening hours, services or prices without looking too playful. Save moons, shooting stars and quote ornaments for brands whose whole feed has that mood.
