IKR means “I know, right?”: a quick, enthusiastic way of agreeing with something someone just said.
What IKR can mean
1. Enthusiastic agreement
The main use. Someone says the new series finale was terrible, and the answer is “ikr!” It means “exactly, you've said what I was thinking.” It often arrives with extra emojis, because it is an emotional, matching-energy word.
2. Shared frustration
Used for complaints too. “Another delay?” “ikr, it's ridiculous.” The speaker is joining the grumble rather than adding a new point.
3. Sarcasm
Sometimes “ikr” is dry. If a friend jokes that Monday mornings are great and you reply “ikr” with a flat tone, the answer means the opposite of agreement. Context and emoji tell you which one it is.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments
A short echo under someone's opinion, often as a reply to another comment: “ikr, the soundtrack alone.” It works as a like with words, and it keeps comment threads friendly.
DMs and group chats
The quickest reply when two people are gossiping or sharing news. It tells the other person “I'm with you” without having to write a full sentence.
Reactions to Stories
People reply to a friend's Story with “ikr” when the Story states a relatable moment, such as a delayed train or a queue that never moves.

How to reply to IKR
Questions people ask
Is IKR the same as “I know”?
Close, but not identical. “I know” can be flat or a bit dismissive, as in “yes, you've told me.” “IKR” is warmer. It says you agree and that you find the point as striking as they do.
How can I tell if IKR is sarcastic?
Look at what it replies to and how it is written. A plain “ikr” after something obviously bad or silly usually means disbelief shared with a smile. An exaggerated “ikr” after a joke about something good may be sarcasm.
Does IKR ever mean something else?
Not in everyday chat. In Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs it means “I know, right?” and nothing else you are likely to meet.
Is IKR suitable for a brand account?
It works in a casual reply to a customer who has said something relatable, like “ikr, Mondays.” It is a poor fit for a complaint or an apology, where it can sound like you agree and are not going to fix it.
