DNI means “do not interact”: a bio note asking certain people to stay away from the account's posts and DMs.

Stands for: Do not interactTone: firm, protective, sometimes defensive

What DNI can mean

1. A boundary in a bio

The main meaning. A DNI list tells visitors who is not welcome to comment, follow or message. “DNI: anyone who trashes fan art” sets a clear expectation before you interact. It is a request, not a block.

2. A sorting tool for niche communities

Fandom, art, roleplay and activism accounts use it the most, often with a long list of topics or groups. Some people use the plural: “my DNI” means the criteria list itself.

3. Other uses of DNI

Outside social media, DNI can mean “do not intubate” in medicine, or the US Director of National Intelligence. Those are the only other meanings you are likely to see, and neither appears in a typical bio.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Instagram bios

Appears in the short text under the name, sometimes with a link to a longer list on a link-in-bio page. Bios have a character limit, so people often write “dni in pinned” and put the list in a pinned post.

  • Pinned posts and Highlights

A long DNI list may sit in a pinned post or a Story Highlight named “rules.” Those are easy to miss, so a quick look before commenting on a small account is polite.

  • Comments and replies

People point to it when they feel someone ignored it: “please read the bio, dni.” It can start arguments, because being told off in public is rarely welcome.

How to reply to DNI

Questions people ask

Does a DNI actually stop anyone from interacting?

No. It is a stated wish and has no effect on Instagram's settings. To stop someone from interacting you have to block or restrict them, or switch comments off. A DNI only works if people choose to respect it.

Why do some bios add a letter, like MDNI?

Extra letters change the meaning. MDNI is commonly read as “minors do not interact,” a short way of keeping under-18s out of an account. If a bio uses an unfamiliar combination, the list next to it is the best guide to what it means.

Should I follow someone whose bio says DNI?

Read the list first. If you are on it, do not follow, comment or message. If you are not, it is fine to follow. If you are unsure, leaving a small account alone costs nothing.

Should a brand put DNI in its bio?

Usually not. A brand wants customers to get in touch, and a DNI list can put people off. If you need rules, write a short community guideline in a pinned post and use Instagram's block and restrict tools for real problems.
