Slang meaning

What does mid mean?

Mid means average, and it is rarely a compliment. Calling a film, a song or a meal “mid” says it was fine but didn't live up to the hype. It is meant as a mild put-down.

Mid means average or mediocre: not bad, but not as good as people say. In games it also means the middle lane.

Tone: unimpressed, dismissive and a touch smug

What mid can mean

1. Mediocre, overhyped

The main slang meaning. “Mid” is not “terrible”, it is “nothing special.” A famous restaurant, a much-talked-about album or a trending recipe can all be called mid. The put-down comes from the gap between the hype and the result.

2. The middle lane in games

In team games such as League of Legends and Dota 2, “mid” is the middle lane and the player who holds it. “Who's mid?” is a question about positions, and “mid or feed” is a play on that. In a gaming chat it carries no insult.

3. Simply “middle”

Used with a hyphen, it is only a position in time or range: mid-twenties, mid-range, mid-July. When it stands alone and is followed by a noun, such as “mid-season sale”, it is an ordinary prefix and not slang.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Comments under reviews and recommendations

A food reel from a hyped restaurant, a film trailer or an influencer's favourite product often draws a single-word “mid”. It reads as a quick verdict, and sometimes starts a debate.

  • Replies to opinions

“Mid take” is a way to call a view unremarkable or lazy. It aims at the opinion, not the person, but it can still sting, especially from a stranger.

  • Gaming comments and Stories

Players use it for the lane or the role. The same word then means two different things in one app, so the game or the clip tells you which.

  • Facebook groups

Less common than on Instagram, but it appears in local group reviews, such as a restaurant or a film, from younger members. Older members may write “mediocre” instead.

How to reply to mid

Questions people ask

Is mid an insult?

It is a mild one. It says something is average, not awful. Aimed at a film or a meal it is a normal opinion. Aimed at a person's looks or work it can feel hurtful, even though it is just one word.

What is the difference between mid and basic?

“Mid” judges quality: it says something is average. “Basic” judges taste, and describes something or someone that follows the most popular and predictable choices. Something can be mid without being basic.

How should a business reply to a customer who calls its product mid?

Thank them, then ask what would have made it better. A calm reply shows other readers you listen, and mid is a mild criticism, not an abusive one. Avoid arguing with it.

Does mid mean the middle lane in gaming?

Yes. In lane-based games such as League of Legends and Dota 2, mid is the central lane and the player who holds it. In a gaming comment, check the game before taking it as a criticism.
