Facebook sizes
Facebook post size
For a Facebook photo post, 1080 × 1350 pixels is the size to use: a 4:5 portrait that takes up more of a phone screen than any other common shape. Square and landscape posts work too. We found no current Meta figure for ordinary posts, so these are the sizes the main guides recommend, and Meta’s ads guide asks for the same 4:5 shape in the feed.

Pick the shape, then the pixels
On a phone, every Facebook post is as wide as the screen, so the shape of the image decides how much of the screen it takes. A 4:5 portrait is the tallest of the usual shapes. A square is a fifth shorter, and a 1.91:1 landscape is less than half as tall as the portrait.
| Shape | Pixels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 4:5 portrait | 1080 × 1350 | People, products, food and anything you want to fill a phone screen |
| 1:1 square | 1080 × 1080 | Graphics you also share elsewhere, such as menus, price lists and quote cards |
| 1.91:1 landscape | 1080 × 566 | Wide scenes, big group photos and event announcements |
| Link preview | 1200 × 627 | The picture Facebook pulls from a web page when you share its link |
Hootsuite’s guide, updated in October 2026, lists portrait, square, landscape and link sizes, and Sprout Social’s, updated in May 2026, gives 1080 × 1350 as its recommended post size. For paid posts, Meta’s ads guide points the same way and recommends 4:5 for Facebook Feed images.
How big a post really looks
On a computer, a post appears far smaller than the file. Sprout Social puts the largest display width at 470 pixels in the feed and 504 pixels on a Page. At 470 pixels wide, a 4:5 post stands about 588 pixels tall, a square one 470 and a landscape one only about 246.
Phones are a different story. The post spans the screen, and most current phones are more than 1,000 physical pixels across, so a 1,080-pixel-wide image is shown close to its real size. That is why the upload should be 1,080 pixels wide even though a computer shows less than half that width.
Tip: Lettering 30 pixels tall in a 1,080-pixel-wide file appears about 13 pixels tall in a 470-pixel feed column on a computer. Preview fine print at that size before you post.
If you boost the post
Boosting turns a post into an ad, and Meta’s ads guide sets the specs for Facebook Feed images: a 4:5 ratio at 1440 × 1800 pixels, as a JPG or PNG of up to 30 MB. The minimum is 600 pixels wide and, for a 4:5 image, 750 pixels tall, with a 3% tolerance on the ratio.
A 1080 × 1350 post clears those minimums, so it can be boosted as it stands. The 1440 × 1800 version is the same shape with a third more pixels in each direction.
Tip: Think a post might get boosted later? Design it at 1440 × 1800 from the start. It posts as an ordinary 4:5 image today and already matches Meta’s ad recommendation.
Keeping photos and graphics sharp
- Save photos as JPG in the sRGB colour space. Meta’s help centre names an sRGB JPG as the fastest-loading format for Page covers, and the same setting keeps colours in posts from shifting.
- Save graphics that are mostly text as PNG. Meta says a PNG may give a better result for profile pictures and covers that carry a logo or text, and JPG compression can smear the edges of letters.
- Start from the original file. A screenshot, or a photo saved out of a chat app, has usually been compressed once already, and Facebook compresses it again.
- Upload at least 1,080 pixels wide. A smaller image is enlarged to fill a phone screen and looks soft.
- Posting from the phone app? Check its media settings for an option to upload in HD.
Mistakes that make a post look small or messy
- Using the link size, 1200 × 627, for a photo post. It works, but it is a landscape that fills well under half the height a 4:5 post would.
- Posting a full-screen 9:16 Story graphic to the feed. It is far taller than the shapes the guides recommend, so make a 4:5 version instead.
- Putting a paragraph on the image. The post has room for text above the photo, where it stays crisp at any size.
- Switching shape with every post. On a Page, a run of posts in one shape looks deliberate as people scroll through it.

Questions people ask
What is the best image size for a Facebook post?
1080 × 1350 pixels, a 4:5 portrait. Of the common shapes it fills the most of a phone screen, and Meta recommends the same 4:5 shape for Feed image ads, so the post can be boosted without a new design.
Is 1200 × 630 the right size for a Facebook post?
It is a link preview size. 1200 × 630 and Hootsuite’s 1200 × 627 are both about 1.91:1, the landscape shape used for the image on a shared link. For a photo post, a 1080 × 1350 portrait appears more than twice as tall.
Are Page posts and profile posts the same size?
Yes, use the same files for both. The one difference Sprout Social notes is the largest display width on screen: up to 470 pixels for a post in the feed and up to 504 pixels on the Page itself.
What size should a boosted Facebook post be?
Meta’s ads guide recommends 1440 × 1800 pixels, a 4:5 ratio, as a JPG or PNG of up to 30 MB. Its minimum for that shape is 600 pixels wide and 750 tall, so a 1080 × 1350 post qualifies too.
Why do my photos look worse on Facebook than on my phone?
Facebook compresses uploads, and the loss is worse when the file is small or was already compressed. Upload the original photo at 1,080 pixels wide or more as an sRGB JPG, and use PNG for graphics with text.
