What is a digital product?
A digital product is something a customer receives online, as a file, a link or access to content, with nothing posted to them. Think a PDF guide, a preset pack, a template, a course or a ticket. This page covers how selling one differs from selling a physical item.

A product delivered online as a file, a link or access to content, so nothing is shipped. Guides, templates, presets, courses and audio are common examples.
What counts, and what is a different thing
- Files: ebooks, worksheets, spreadsheets, design templates, photo presets, sample packs.
- Access: a members area, a private video series, a community invite, a recurring newsletter.
- Codes and keys: software licences or a ticket that is checked at the door.
- Not a digital product: a service that happens live, such as a coaching call. That is a booking, even if the payment is online.
The test is simple: could the buyer have it a minute after paying, without anyone doing more work? If yes, it is a digital product.
How selling one differs from selling a parcel
There is no stock count, no packing and no courier, so the cost of one more sale is close to zero. In return you take on different jobs. You must deliver the file or the access reliably after payment. You must decide what happens if the link is shared around. And you must decide in advance how you handle refunds, because the buyer has already received the thing.
Many sellers pair a digital product with a free version. A one-page checklist can be given in exchange for an email address, and the full guide sold to those who want more. That free version is usually called a lead magnet.
Where you sell matters too. Meta’s Commerce Platform page describes tools for selling products across Shops, Marketplace and Instagram Shopping. It does not say here which kinds of product are allowed, so check Meta’s current commerce rules and your own app before planning around a Shop.
Taking payment
A payment provider usually handles the money. Razorpay’s documentation, for example, describes its checkout as a way to start accepting payments from customers on your website. The delivery step is yours to build: after the payment is confirmed, send the link or unlock the access.
Tip: State on the product page exactly what the buyer receives: format, number of pages or files and whether updates are included. Most refund requests for digital goods start with a mismatch between expectation and file.
An example
A running coach sells a 12-week training plan as a PDF. Followers who comment PLAN under her Reel get a message with a link to the checkout page, and the PDF is emailed once the payment clears.
Questions people ask
What is a digital product?
It is a product the customer receives online, such as a file download, a link or access to content, with no physical shipping. Ebooks, templates, presets, courses and audio files are typical examples.
What are examples of digital products to sell on Instagram?
Guides and checklists, meal or workout plans, Lightroom-style presets, design templates, spreadsheet trackers, recorded workshops and paid communities. Pick something your posts already show you are good at.
Is an online coaching call a digital product?
Usually not. A call needs a person to show up at a set time, so it works like a booking. A recording of that call, sold as a download, would be a digital product.
Do I need a website to sell a digital product?
You need a page where someone can pay and a way to deliver the file. That can be a store page from a selling tool or your own site. The payment provider you pick sets its own sign-up rules, so read them.
Can I sell digital products in an Instagram Shop?
Meta decides what its commerce tools allow, and the rules can differ by country and change over time. Check Meta’s current commerce policies and the Shop settings in your own app before assuming it will work.
