Emoji meaning
What does π mean in a message?
π shows an eggplant, known as aubergine in the UK and brinjal in India. Online it is better known as a stand-in for a penis, so outside a clearly food-related post most people read it as a sexual joke or a come-on.

Literally an eggplant, but online it usually stands for a penis, so unless the post is about food, most people read it as sexual.
What π can mean
1. A stand-in for a penis
This is the meaning most people on social media think of first. The vegetableβs shape made π the standard emoji for a penis in jokes, innuendo and sexting. It is adult content: between consenting adults it can be playful, but it is out of place with coworkers, family or anyone underage, and from a stranger it is unwelcome.
2. The actual vegetable
Cooks, farmers and grocers still use it literally: a moussaka recipe, a baingan bharta Reel, a market stallβs price list. Some older users send it innocently too, about dinner plans or the vegetable patch. In a post that is plainly about food the literal meaning holds, though jokes in the comments are common.
When someone sends you π
What it means in a DM
From a partner or someone youβve been flirting with, π almost always means sex is on their mind, as a joke or as an invitation. Answer only as far as you want to: a laugh, a change of subject or a clear no are all fine. From a stranger or anyone you didnβt invite, it is unsolicited sexual content, and on Instagram you can ignore it, restrict or block the account, or report the message.
Is it flirty?
Yes, and well past subtle. Outside food talk, π is an openly sexual signal, not a gentle hint. Between two people who are already flirting it can be playful. From someone you barely know it is crude, and you donβt owe it a reply.

Questions people ask
Will Instagram remove a post that uses π?
Not for the emoji alone. In 2019 Facebook and Instagram added βcommonly sexual emojisβ to their rules on sexual solicitation, but a post breaks the rule only when the emoji comes with an offer or request for sex, nudes or sexual partners. A recipe with π is fine. Back in 2015 Instagram did block the π hashtag from search because of how it was being used.
Why does π mean a penis?
Its long, rounded shape made it the obvious stand-in, and by 2015 the habit was common enough for Instagram to block its hashtag. π and π½ sometimes get used the same way.
Can a food business use π in posts?
Yes. In a dish photo, a recipe or a price list most readers take it literally, but expect the odd joke in the comments. Writing βaubergineβ or βbrinjalβ in the caption and letting the photo do the work keeps the focus on the food.
Where did the π emoji come from?
It was one of the food emojis on early Japanese phones and was added to Unicode 6.0 in 2010 under the official name AUBERGINE. In Japan the vegetable has a traditional meaning of its own: dreaming of an eggplant on the first night of the new year is said to bring luck, after Mount Fuji and a hawk.
