Zodiac symbols for every sign and planet
The 12 zodiac symbols run from ♈ Aries to ♓ Pisces, and most phones show them as emoji: on an iPhone, white signs on purple squares. Copy from the first set below to get the plain glyph instead. Planet and aspect symbols, moon phases and the Chinese zodiac animals follow, and the table further down gives each sign’s dates and element.

Why ♈ turns into a coloured square
The twelve signs have been in Unicode since the early 1990s, from U+2648 for Aries to U+2653 for Pisces. When Unicode took in the Japanese phone emoji in 2010, the zodiac emoji were matched to these existing characters, and Unicode now marks them to display as emoji by default. That is why a phone draws ♈ as a picture rather than a letter-like symbol. On an iPhone it is a white sign on a purple square, and every other phone maker draws its own version.
To get the bare glyph, a second, invisible character has to follow the sign: U+FE0E, the text presentation selector. Every sign in the first set on this page carries one already. Many apps honour it and show a plain symbol in the colour of your text; some ignore it and show the emoji anyway, so check your bio from a second phone before you commit to a style.
Tip: Don’t mix the two in one line. ♈︎ next to ♌️ looks like a mistake, so pick text or emoji for the whole bio.

Western dates move by a day in some years, because a sign begins when the sun reaches a set point in the sky, not on a fixed calendar date. Vedic astrology, widely followed in India, measures the signs against the stars instead, which puts each one about 24 days later: the sun enters sidereal Aries, Mesha, around 14 April. Vedic readings also lean on the moon sign, or rashi, more than on the sun sign that Western horoscopes use.
Planets, aspects and the “big three”
Astrologers use astronomy’s old planet symbols: ☉ for the Sun, ☽ for the Moon, ☿ ♀ ♂ ♃ ♄ for the five planets known since ancient times, then ♅ ♆ ♇ for Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. ♀ and ♂ double as the female and male signs, so like the zodiac signs they have emoji forms and may switch style. ♇ is a P and an L joined together, though astrologers often draw Pluto another way, as a circle over a crescent over a cross.
Aspects are the angles between planets in a birth chart: ☌ conjunction (0°), ☍ opposition (180°), △ trine (120°) and □ square (90°). A planet that appears to move backwards gets ℞, the same Rx sign that marks a prescription, so “☿℞” is Mercury retrograde.
The “big three” in a bio are the sun, moon and rising signs. One common shorthand uses ☀️ 🌙 ⬆️; the plainer version is ☉ ☽ ↑, as in “☉ ♌︎ ☽ ♓︎ ↑ ♍︎” for a Leo sun, a Pisces moon and Virgo rising.
Ophiuchus and the Chinese zodiac
⛎ is Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. The sun passes in front of this constellation from late November to mid-December, between Scorpius and Sagittarius, but Western and Vedic astrology both keep twelve signs and leave it out, so the stories that resurface every few years about a “new” thirteenth sign don’t change anyone’s horoscope. Its emoji was added in 2010 with the first large batch of emoji.
The Chinese zodiac is a separate system: twelve animals in a twelve-year cycle, with each year starting at Lunar New Year rather than on 1 January. Someone born in January 2026 is therefore a Snake, not a Horse, because the Year of the Horse began on 17 February 2026. The years in the animal labels above follow the same rule, so check the Lunar New Year date for January and February birthdays. Vietnam’s version of the cycle swaps the rabbit for a cat.
Signs in a bio, caption or Story
- One sign next to your name says plenty. All twelve in a row read as decoration and push the useful words further down.
- A screen reader announces ♈ as “Aries”, so unlike most symbols a zodiac sign can stand in for its word. Planet and aspect marks are less predictable, so add the word when it matters.
- Astrologers and tarot readers can open a seasonal post with the sign itself: “♏︎ season readings are open” tells followers the topic before they read another word.
Questions people ask
Why does my zodiac sign show as a purple box?
Phones treat the twelve signs as emoji unless told otherwise, and that is how an iPhone draws them. Copy the signs from the plain-text set on this page instead: each one carries a hidden request for the text style. Most apps follow it, though a few still show the emoji.
Which symbol is Scorpio and which is Virgo?
Both look like a small m. ♍ Virgo ends in a loop that crosses back over the last stroke, while ♏ Scorpio ends in an arrowhead, the scorpion’s sting. At bio size the difference is tiny, so writing the name beside the symbol saves people from squinting.
What is the 13th zodiac sign?
People usually mean Ophiuchus ⛎, a constellation the sun crosses between Scorpius and Sagittarius. Astronomers include it on the sun’s path; horoscopes don’t, so nobody’s sign changes because of it.
What do ☉ ☽ and ↑ mean in a bio?
They stand for the sun sign, moon sign and rising sign, often called the big three. “☉ ♐︎ ☽ ♋︎ ↑ ♎︎” means a Sagittarius sun, a Cancer moon and Libra rising.
Is my sign different in Vedic astrology?
Often, yes. Vedic astrology places each sign about 24 days later than Western astrology, so someone born on 1 April is an Aries in a Western horoscope but usually Meena, Pisces, in a Vedic chart. Vedic readings also put more weight on the moon sign.
