The table flip emoticon and how to unflip it

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ is the table flip: a tiny figure hurling a table over in frustration, posted as a joke when something has gone wrong. The usual answer is the unflip, ┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ), which puts the table back on its legs. Tap any version to copy it, or build your own from the parts at the end.

What the table flip means

The flip is anger played for laughs. People post it when a printer jams, a team loses or a recipe fails, so the target is usually a situation, often the poster’s own bad luck, rather than another person. The figure is tiny and the table sails off along a neat little arc, which makes the whole thing read as theatrical rather than threatening.

It comes with a stock reply. When someone flips a table in a chat or a comment thread, a friend answers with an unflip such as ┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ): the table is quietly set back on its legs, which says “calm down, it’s fine.” Discord has both built in. Its /tableflip command adds a flip to the end of your message, and /unflip adds that exact put-back.

Reading the parts

PartCharactersWhat they are
Flipped table┻━┻Heavy box-drawing pieces whose short strokes point up, so the legs are in the air
Standing table┬─┬The light box-drawing pieces with the strokes pointing down, used in unflips
Arms╯ ┛ ノ ノA box-drawing arc, a box-drawing corner, and the katakana letter no at full and half width
Face°□°Two degree signs for wide eyes and a white square for a mouth open mid-shout
Flight path︵ 彡 ミ ⌒︵ is a bracket made for vertical Japanese text, so it lies on its side; 彡 is a kanji component of three slanting strokes; ミ is the katakana mi; ⌒ is a plain arc
Angrier faces益 ಠ ಥ Д益 is a kanji standing in for gritted teeth, ಠ and ಥ are letters of the Kannada alphabet used as glaring or teary eyes, and Д, a Cyrillic capital, is the mouth mid-scream

Copies differ in small ways. Many close the face with a full-width ) from Japanese typing, so they look slightly lopsided beside the plain-bracket version, and the spacing around ︵ varies. These are the same flip; pick one and use it consistently.

Where the table flip comes from

The flip grew out of Japanese kaomoji, and the idea behind it already had an everyday Japanese name: chabudai-gaeshi, overturning the low dining table in a temper, a stock scene for a furious father in older TV dramas and manga. Japanese versions tend to use 彡 or ミ for the motion, as in (ノ`Д´)ノ彡┻━┻. The arms-up (╯°□°)╯ figure is the one most English-speaking users know, and it is the one Discord’s command produces.

Using it on Instagram and Facebook

A flip lands best at the end of a caption or comment, after the words that explain it: “third failed loaf this week (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻.” It isn’t cheap on space, though. The classic flip takes 12 characters and the double flip 17, out of the 150 an Instagram bio allows.

  • From a business account, flip tables only at your own expense: the courier, the weather, your own printer. Aimed at a customer, even in fun, it reads as a tantrum.
  • When a customer flips one over a sold-out item, an unflip makes a friendly reply: “┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ) back in stock Friday.”
  • Flips built with ಠ or ಥ need a Kannada font. Current phones have one, but an older device may show boxes, so the plain (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ is the safest choice for a wide audience.
  • A screen reader announces every piece, box-drawing names included, so a flip on its own tells a listener very little. Let your words say what went wrong.

Questions people ask

What does (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ mean?

It means “I give up, this is ridiculous,” said with a grin. The figure throws a table over in mock rage, so it suits small disasters: a failed bake, a lost match, a printer that won’t print. It is rarely meant as real anger.

How do I unflip a table?

Reply with an unflip, such as ┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ) or ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ). The table stands on its legs again and the little figure sets it down, which reads as “calm down, it’s fine.” In Discord, the /unflip command adds one for you.

Is there a shortcut for typing the table flip?

In Discord, type /tableflip and choose the command; it adds the flip to the end of your message. Elsewhere, copy it from this page once and save it as a text shortcut on your phone with a code that isn’t a real word, such as tflip, so it doesn’t fire by accident.

Why does my table flip look broken?

Usually the phone is mixing fonts. The table, the Japanese arms and any Kannada eyes each come from a different font, so spacing shifts between devices, and ಠ can turn into a box on an older phone. Some copies floating around the web also contain an invisible zero-width character; the versions on this page don’t.

Is the table flip rude?

Not usually. It is self-mocking frustration, and most people read it as a joke. Aimed at someone, though, it can feel like a tantrum, so keep it for your own bad luck and answer other people’s flips with an unflip.
