Instagram's 24-hour messaging rule, explained simply

October 4, 2026 · 4 min read

If you've ever wondered why an Instagram automation can't just message all your followers, the answer is one rule: the 24-hour window.

The rule

Through Instagram's official API, a professional account can only send messages to someone who messaged it first, and only within 24 hours of that person's latest message. Every new message from them opens a fresh 24-hour window.

What opens the window

  • A DM they send you
  • A reply to your story
  • A reaction to your story
  • A mention of you in their story

What about comments?

Comments are different. Instagram lets a business send one private reply to each comment, within 7 days of the comment. That first message can only be plain text. If the person replies, the normal 24-hour window opens and you can send links, buttons and cards.

Tip: That's why good comment-to-DM flows ask a question in the first DM (“Reply YES and I'll send it”): the reply unlocks everything else.

Can you message after 24 hours?

Meta has a “human agent” tag that extends the window to 7 days, but it's meant for real people answering support questions, needs Meta's approval, and isn't for marketing. Automated reminders should stay inside the 24 hours.

What this means for you

  • Mass DMs to all followers aren't possible through official tools, and tools that do it risk your account.
  • Reminders and follow-ups should be sent within a day of the person's last message.
  • Fast replies matter: answering within minutes keeps the window, and the conversation, open.
