The quick answer
To add a link to an Instagram Story, use the link sticker. Create your Story, tap the sticker icon at the top of the screen, choose Link, paste the web address and tap Done. Anyone watching can tap the sticker to open the page. Reports say every account can use it except two kinds: new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly share hate speech, misinformation or other content that breaks Instagram’s Community Guidelines. Instagram’s Help Center describes the sticker but doesn’t say who can use it, so check your own sticker tray.
You don't need 10,000 followers. That was the rule for the old swipe-up link, which only larger and verified accounts got. Instagram replaced swipe up with the link sticker in 2021 and then opened the sticker to everyone.
Add the link sticker, step by step
- Copy the link you want to share from your browser or app.
- In Instagram, tap Your story (your profile picture with a plus sign) at the top of the feed.
- Take a photo or video, or swipe up to pick one from your camera roll.
- Tap the sticker icon at the top of the screen, the square smiley face.
- Tap Link. If it isn't in view, type “link” into the search bar at the top of the sticker tray.
- Paste the address into the URL field. To change what the sticker says, open the option to customize the sticker text and write something like “Read the recipe” or “Book a table”.
- Tap Done. Drag the sticker into place, pinch to resize it, and tap it to cycle through its color styles.
- Share to Your story, or to Close Friends if the link is only for them.
Tip: Always change the sticker text. A bare address like shop.example.com/p/48 says nothing about the page, while “Shop this dress” or “Get the free checklist” tells people what they'll get for tapping.
Why you can't find the link sticker
If Link isn't in your sticker tray, or it vanished after working before, these are the likely reasons:
- The account is new. Reports say Instagram holds the link sticker back from new accounts, and its Help Center doesn't say how long the wait lasts. Keep using the account normally.
- The account has lost access for breaking the rules. Reports say repeatedly sharing hate speech, misinformation or other content against the Community Guidelines removes the sticker. Account Status in your settings shows removed content and features you can't use.
- The app is out of date. Update Instagram from your app store, then close and reopen it.
- It's further down the tray. Sticker layouts change, but the search bar in the tray finds it.
You don't need a Business or Creator account for the sticker; personal accounts have it too. A professional account adds insights, which show how many people tapped.
If the sticker is there but your link won't attach, Instagram may be refusing the address itself, since links to spam, scams or harmful sites aren't allowed. Paste the page's full address, copied from your browser, and check that it opens on a phone.
How to get more taps
The sticker is small and Stories move quickly, so a link nobody notices is the usual problem. A few habits help:
- Name the payoff. “Full recipe here” or “See the menu” beats a domain name, both on the sticker and in any text on the Story.
- Give the link its own frame. Show the context first (the dish, the product in use, the event poster) and put the link on the next frame.
- Keep it away from the edges. Your name and the progress bar sit at the top and the reply bar at the bottom, so a sticker placed there is easy to miss.
- Point at it. An arrow, a GIF or a short line such as “tap the link” helps viewers who don't realize stickers are tappable.
- One link per frame. When you have several links, give each its own Story rather than crowding them together.
- Test it. Tap your own sticker after posting and check that the page loads properly on a phone.
Links open in Instagram's built-in browser rather than Safari or Chrome, so visitors may not be logged in to your site. Keep the page short and simple, and if it asks people to sign up or pay, go through that flow once from inside Instagram before you post.
Measure what the link does
Instagram won't show you who tapped your link, only how many. On a professional account, open the Story and swipe up to see its insights; link taps are listed with the other interactions, though the exact label varies between app versions.
For more detail, add UTM tags to the address before you paste it, for example ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=story&utm_campaign=spring-sale. Your website analytics will then show visits from that Story separately from your bio link and other traffic.
Tip: Divide link taps by the number of people who saw that frame to get a tap rate. Comparing tap rates across Stories tells you which wording, placement and offers people actually respond to.
Keep the link up after 24 hours
A Story expires after a day, but its link doesn't have to. Add the Story to a Highlight and it stays on your profile, sticker and all, until you take it down. A Highlight named “Links”, “Shop” or “Start here” gives visitors a permanent menu of the pages you want them to see.
Review those Highlights whenever a link changes. A Highlight that still points to a sold-out product or last month's offer frustrates the people who tap it.
Questions people ask
Do you need 10,000 followers to add a link to an Instagram Story?
No. The 10,000-follower rule belonged to the old swipe-up feature. The link sticker that replaced it is reportedly open to every account except new accounts and those that keep breaking Instagram's Community Guidelines, though the Help Center page doesn't list who can use it.
Can a personal account add a link to a Story?
Yes. The link sticker isn't limited to Business or Creator accounts. A professional account adds insights so you can count the taps, but the sticker itself works the same way on any account that has it.
Why did my link sticker disappear?
The likely reasons are that content on the account was removed for breaking the Community Guidelines, which can take the sticker away, or that the app needs an update. Account Status in your settings lists removed content and any features you can't use.
Can I see who clicked the link in my Story?
No. A professional account shows how many people tapped the link, not who they were. The viewer list shows who watched the Story, but there's no way to tell which of those viewers tapped.
Does a link sticker still work in a Highlight?
Yes. Saving the Story to a Highlight keeps the link tappable on your profile after the 24 hours are up, for as long as the Story stays in that Highlight.
Can I put a clickable link in an Instagram Reel?
Not in the caption, because links in post and Reel captions aren't clickable. Meta lists a few Reel links a month as part of its higher Meta Verified plans: two on Plus, four on Premium and six on Max. Everyone else points viewers to the bio link or a DM.
