How to take bookings on Instagram

How to take bookings from Instagram: DM flow versus a booking link, getting paid up front, cutting no-shows, and which reminders Meta’s rules allow.

The short answer: send people to a booking page, keep DMs for questions

The most reliable way to take bookings on Instagram is to put one booking link where people already tap (your bio, a Story link sticker, a link you send in a DM) and let them choose a slot and pay there. Use DMs for questions, not for scheduling. Arranging a time by message works for a handful of clients a week, but each booking costs several messages and every one of them can go stale. Instagram is where people find and ask you; a booking page is where the booking is made.

On the last row, Instagram’s Help Center says action buttons are offered through a limited number of providers, that you need an existing account with the partner, and that only one button can show on your profile at a time. The buttons it lists are Book now, Reserve and Order food, and the page says the feature is being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet. To add one, open Edit profile, then below Public business information tap Action buttons. The page does not say which countries each partner covers, so look at what your own profile offers.

Why DMs alone make a poor booking system

Besides the time it takes, Meta’s messaging rules put limits on what you can send, and they affect booking. Meta’s developer documentation, updated in September 2026, says a conversation begins when a person messages your account, and that a business can send a message only after that, within a standard window that for most actions lasts 24 hours. A click-to-Direct ad can give up to 7 days from the person’s first message.

Private replies to comments work differently. Per Meta’s page on them (updated in June 2026), you can send one private reply to a comment within 7 days of the comment, only one message can go to the commenter, and follow-ups can be sent only if the person responds, and within 24 hours of the response. The reply lands in the person’s inbox if they follow your account, or in the Requests folder if they do not. For Instagram Live, replies are possible only while the broadcast runs.

What this means in practice: you cannot count on a DM to remind someone of a booking made three days ago, because their last message to you is long outside the window. Your DM is a conversation tool, and the confirmation and reminder need a channel without that limit, such as email, SMS or a calendar invite. Meta also has a separate Human Agent window of 7 days for replies written by a real person who needs more time, but it is for responding to messages, not for marketing or reminders.

Take money up front to reduce no-shows

Booking without payment means a booking is a hope. A deposit or full payment turns it into a commitment. For small services in India, UPI makes this easy, and Razorpay’s documentation says its Payment Links need no website or app. A link carries a fixed amount for one customer, with a due date after which it expires, and the dashboard can send SMS reminders about outstanding payments. Those reminders are about unpaid links, not about appointments, so do not rely on them as appointment reminders.

  • Full payment suits one-off calls and short sessions. A deposit suits longer or costlier work. Razorpay lists partial payments, but a minimum first instalment is set through its API, as of its FAQ, so check your own dashboard before planning around it.
  • State the refund rule on the page. Razorpay’s May 2026 blog says no gateway in India returns its processing fee on a refund, so each refund costs you that fee.
  • Decide what happens when you cancel: a full refund or a free new slot. Offer the same to the client who cancels in time, and apply it to everyone.
  • Keep your own list of who booked, who paid and for what slot, whatever tool you use.

Reminders that actually reach people

Since a DM reminder only reaches someone who messaged you in the last 24 hours, plan reminders on channels that always work. A confirmation email or calendar invite sent the moment they book, plus an SMS or email the day before, covers most gaps. Many tools do this for you, so check which reminders yours sends and when.

  • At booking: confirmation with date, time, time zone, link or address and the cancellation rule.
  • A day before: a short reminder with a one-tap way to reschedule.
  • On the day: a message a couple of hours earlier, only if the client has written to you within the last 24 hours, since a DM after that gap is outside Meta’s window.
  • After: a thank-you with what happens next, and one line asking whether they want to book again.

A short, specific message beats a long one: “Your 4 pm call tomorrow is confirmed. Join here. Need another time? Pick one here before 4 pm today.” People ignore generic reminders and answer ones that make rescheduling easy.

Using comments and DM keywords to start a booking

Posts often attract “how do I book?” comments. You can reply to each by hand, or a tool can start the conversation. DMFast is our product, so weigh this accordingly. Someone comments a word such as BOOK on your post or Reel, DMFast replies under the comment and sends a private message. Because Meta allows no links or buttons in the first message to a commenter, that message is plain text asking them to reply (for example “Reply YES and I’ll send the booking link”). Once they reply, a link card with your booking link can follow. DMFast can also answer DM keywords such as PRICE or HOURS, and send one reminder if someone stops halfway.

In India, DMFast’s store can also take the booking itself, paid or free, through Razorpay, with no fee from DMFast on sales; Razorpay’s fee still comes out of each payment. It works with Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages only, and not with WhatsApp or personal accounts. Whatever tool you pick, ask it which of these it can do.

Checklist before you start taking bookings

  • Your account is a Business or Creator account, so messaging tools work.
  • One booking link works on a phone and is in your bio.
  • Hours, length, price and cancellation rule are written on the page.
  • Payment is taken at booking, and you know how a refund works and what it costs.
  • Confirmation and reminders go by email, SMS or invite, not only by DM.
  • You have paid for a test booking from a second phone.
  • You keep your own record of bookings and payments.

Questions people ask

Can I take bookings on Instagram without a website?

Yes. A booking page or store link in your bio is enough, and Razorpay’s documentation says its Payment Links need no website or app. A website helps but is not required to take a booking and a payment.

Can I send a booking reminder by Instagram DM?

Only to someone who has messaged you within the last 24 hours, per Meta’s developer documentation on messaging windows. A reminder sent the day before a booking will usually fall outside that window, so use email, SMS or a calendar invite for reminders.

How do I reduce no-shows when taking bookings?

Take payment or a deposit when the slot is booked, state a cancellation window in the confirmation, send a reminder on a channel that always reaches the person, and make rescheduling one tap. Apply your rule the same way every time.

Does Instagram have a Book button on my profile?

Possibly. Instagram’s Help Center describes action buttons (Book now, Reserve and Order food) that connect to a partner service you already have an account with, only one of which can show on your profile at a time. It says the feature is being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet, and it does not list countries on that page. Look in Edit profile, below Public business information, to see what you are offered, and do not rely on it as your only route.

Do I need a business account to take bookings?

To use official messaging tools such as comment-to-DM, yes: they work only with Instagram professional accounts (Business or Creator). You can still put a booking link in a personal account’s bio, but you cannot automate replies to comments or DMs.
