The short answer, and the routes side by side

To sell digital products in India you need four things: a file or access that solves one specific problem, a page that explains it and takes a price, a way to be paid by UPI and cards, and a way to hand over the file straight after payment. You can do all four with free tools in an afternoon. The harder part is the first one, because people pay for a result, not for a PDF. Nobody can tell you what you will earn, and most first products sell only to people who already follow you.

DMFast publishes this post, and DMFast has a store, so it is listed below with the others and labelled. Fees for other platforms come from their own pricing pages as we recorded them on 6 October 2026, and every figure can change.

What sells, and how to test it before you build it

Products that sell solve one narrow problem for one kind of person. “A budget planner for first-job salaries in Pune” has a buyer. “A planner” has none. The best evidence is already sitting in your comments and DMs. If three different people have asked you the same question in the past month, such as which camera to buy, how you edit a Reel or how to write a resume with no experience, you have a product topic. If nobody has asked, you are guessing.

Run a cheap test before you build anything. Post a Story that says what you plan to make, who it is for and an example price, and ask people to reply with a keyword if they want it. Ten replies from people who are the right audience is a stronger sign than a hundred likes. If you are unsure what format fits, our list of 40 digital product ideas groups them by effort, and the guides on ebooks, Notion templates, Canva templates and presets go deeper into each.

  • Choose one buyer: a student preparing for one exam, a new freelancer, a home baker. Not “anyone interested in business”.
  • Make the first version small enough to finish in a weekend: ten pages, one template, one 40-minute recording.
  • Say what the buyer can do after using it, in a single sentence, and never promise a result such as a job or a sales number.
  • Set a launch price you could defend to a stranger. ₹199 to ₹499 is only an example range for a small first product.

Where to sell: marketplace, store platform or your own page

A marketplace puts your product in front of strangers, and charges for it. A store platform gives you a page and a checkout, and you bring the audience. Your own website gives you control and also gives you every chore. For a creator with an Instagram audience, a store platform or a payment link is usually the quickest to start.

At the time of writing (6 October 2026), the pricing pages we recorded show how differently platforms charge. Gumroad has no monthly fee and takes 10% plus $0.50 on each direct sale, and 30% when the buyer arrives through its Discover marketplace. Topmate lists a 10% commission on sales through your profile or link, and 20% on its marketplace sales. SuperProfile’s free plan is a link-in-bio store, and selling digital products, courses and bookings needs its Creator plan at $29 a month, with 0% commission on sales. Gumroad and SuperProfile quote dollars, so check how each one pays out to an Indian bank account and what conversion costs you.

Read a platform’s fee as a share of what you charge, not as a headline. A 10% share on a ₹299 product is about ₹30 per sale. A fixed monthly plan costs the same in a month with no sales, and becomes cheaper per sale the more you sell. Neither is better in general. It depends on how many sales you expect, which at the start you do not know. Starting on the option with the lowest fixed cost is a reasonable default.

Taking payments: UPI, cards and what the fee does

For your first few sales a UPI ID or QR code is enough, and the money lands in your bank. It gives the buyer no receipt and gives you no order record, so keep a list of who paid, when and for what. A payment link from a provider such as Razorpay adds a receipt and a record you can export. As of 6 October 2026, Razorpay’s pricing page lists 2% per successful domestic transaction (UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets), plus 18% GST on that fee, and no setup or annual fee. That is about 2.36% in all: on a ₹499 sale, an example price, around ₹12 goes in fees and GST and about ₹487 reaches you. Your own rate can differ.

Whoever takes the payment, the fee comes out of each sale before the payout. If you charge ₹99, the same percentage leaves you about ₹97, so very low prices are not a problem for the fee, but they are a problem for your time if every sale needs a message from you. What a buyer finds easy matters more than the fee: someone who sees a UPI option on their phone completes the sale, and someone sent to type card details on a small screen may not.

Delivery: the file should arrive without you

The moment after payment is when a buyer is most interested, and a sale sent by hand an hour later is a worse one. Set up delivery so the file arrives automatically: a download page shown after payment, an email with a link, or both. The email matters, because buyers lose a download page the minute they close it.

Accept that you cannot stop a file being shared. A PDF forwarded to a friend is an annoyance, not a disaster. You can reduce it by putting the buyer’s name in the footer, by selling something that gets updated so the current version is worth buying, and by pricing low enough that most people just pay. Do not make buyers jump through steps that only frustrate honest customers. Our guide on delivering digital products automatically covers the options in detail.

Tip: Open your own checkout on a phone, on mobile data, in a private tab, and buy the product at the real price. Fix every point where you hesitated. Then ask a friend to do the same without help.

Refunds, support and GST in one paragraph

Write your refund policy before the first sale, in two or three sentences on the product page. A reasonable one says what you refund, for how long and how to ask, for example a refund if the file cannot be opened, or if the product is not what the page described. Digital goods cannot be returned, so a refund is a gift of money back, and a clear policy reduces disputes. Whether your payment provider returns its fee on a refunded sale is something we have not confirmed, so check its terms. Put one email address on the page for support, and answer within a day.

On tax, money you earn is income, and whether you must register for GST depends on your turnover and what you sell, so this is general information and not advice. A 2017 GST Council press release on the official CBIC site said service providers with turnover up to ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states) were exempt from compulsory registration even for inter-State supply. That is a dated source and the rule may have changed, so check the current position on the GST portal. How a downloadable product is classified is a question for a chartered accountant. Our guide to GST for content creators covers the rest.

DMFast’s store as one option, with its limits

DMFast is the product behind this site, so weigh this section with that in mind. Its store lets you sell digital products, give a free product in exchange for an email address and optionally a phone number, and take paid or free 1-on-1 bookings. It works in India only, payments go through Razorpay, and DMFast takes no fee on sales. Razorpay’s fee still comes out of each payment before your payout.

The link with Instagram is the comment-to-DM flow. Someone comments a word such as GUIDE on a Reel, DMFast replies under the comment and sends a DM. That first message is plain text, because Instagram and Messenger allow no links or buttons there, so it asks them to reply, for example “Reply YES and I’ll send it”. Once they reply, a link card to your product can follow. It works with Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages. It does not work with WhatsApp, TikTok, Threads or personal Instagram accounts, and it answers people who already asked: it does not find buyers for you.

Your first week, as a checklist

  • Day 1: write down the one person your product is for and the one problem it solves.
  • Day 2: ask your audience in a Story or comment thread and note who replies.
  • Days 3 to 4: build the smallest version, and test that the file opens on a phone.
  • Day 5: choose where to sell and set up a payment method that accepts UPI.
  • Day 6: write the product page: what it is, who it is for, what is inside, the price and the refund policy.
  • Day 7: tell the people who replied, answer questions, and keep a note of every question you hear.

Questions people ask

Do I need a business registration to sell digital products in India?

You can start selling without registering a company, but tax rules apply to the income, and GST registration depends on your turnover and what you sell. This is general information. Check the official GST portal and ask a chartered accountant about your own case.

What is the cheapest way to start selling a digital product?

A UPI QR code and a file you send by hand costs nothing and works for your first few buyers. It scales badly, with no receipts and a lot of messaging, so move to a payment link or a store once sales are regular.

How much does it cost to take payments in India?

As of 6 October 2026, Razorpay’s pricing page lists 2% per successful domestic transaction plus 18% GST on that fee, and no setup or annual fee. Your own rate can differ, and other providers charge differently, so check before you commit.

Should I sell on a marketplace or on my own page?

A marketplace can bring strangers, and costs the largest share per sale. Your own page keeps more of each sale but needs your audience. Many creators with an Instagram following start on their own page, because the audience already exists.

Can DMFast sell my product on WhatsApp?

No. DMFast works with Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages, not WhatsApp. Its store is India only and uses Razorpay for payments, and DMFast takes no fee on sales.
