How to make money with a small Instagram account

With under 10,000 followers, selling your own offer beats waiting for payouts or brand deals. A realistic plan for India, from first offer to comment-to-DM.

The honest picture under 10,000 followers

A small account can earn, but Instagram’s own payouts will be a small part of it. Gifts open at 500 followers, and Instagram’s Help Center says each Star you receive is worth US$0.01 to you, so 100 Stars is one dollar. Bonuses come by invitation only, for limited periods, in countries where Instagram is testing them. Brand offers arrive unevenly, and some are for free products rather than fees. The dependable route is to sell something of your own to the people who already pay attention to you. Trust is what you are selling, and trust doesn’t need 10,000 people.

FollowersWhat Instagram opens upWhere to put your effort
Under 500Gifts are not open yet; they start at 500Services, pre-orders and a free sample that collects an email
500 to 3,000Gifts, if you are 18 or over with a professional account in an eligible country (India is on Instagram’s list)A first low-priced product, and one-to-one slots for your skill
3,000 to 10,000Bonuses only by invitation; Subscriptions need 10,000 followers, so not yetSmall brand deals, UGC and affiliate links, next to what you sell

These stages are a rough way to organise advice, not Instagram rules. The fixed numbers in the table are 500, the follower minimum for Gifts, and 10,000, the minimum for Subscriptions, as Instagram’s Help Center gives them as of October 2026.

Sell first: the three-rung offer ladder

Think of three rungs. A free resource earns an email address and a little trust. A low-priced product shows that people will pay. A higher-priced service or booking pays for your time. Most small accounts need only the first two to learn whether anyone wants what they make. Here is how that looks in four very different niches:

  • A Class 10 science tutor gives away one-page revision sheets, sells chapter packs, and books 30-minute doubt-clearing calls.
  • A home baker in Kochi gives away a three-ingredient recipe card, sells a festival baking ebook, and takes weekend pre-orders by DM.
  • A mehndi artist shares a design sampler, sells a pattern pack, and takes bridal bookings with an advance.
  • A resume reviewer gives away a one-page template, sells a pack of role-specific resumes, and books 20-minute review calls.

Prices here are examples, not quotes: a free sample, a product somewhere between ₹199 and ₹499, and a one-to-one slot priced by what your hour is worth. Do the sum before you build anything. At ₹299, ten buyers is ₹2,990, before the payment provider’s fee and any tax. Whether ten people buy depends on your audience and your offer, and you can only find out by asking.

Tip: Start with the few who already talk to you. A small group replies to your Stories, comments more than once or sends DMs. Your first buyers come from them, not from the silent majority.

A four-week test with a pass mark

Four weeks won’t make an income, but they will show whether people respond to the offer, which is worth knowing before you spend three months on it. Set up the profile first: a professional account, a bio line that says who the page is for and what to do next, and a business email. Bio formulas are at dmfast.app/bios.

  1. Before week one, write the pass mark. For example: three people pay ₹299 for the pack, or ten people ask for the free sample. Decide now, so you can’t move the goalposts later.
  2. Week one, ask: message ten people who have commented or answered your Stories before. Describe the offer in one sentence and ask whether they would pay and what they would want in it. If three say the same thing, change the offer.
  3. Week two, build the smallest version and its delivery: a payment link that takes UPI, a message that says what happens after payment, and a free sample that collects an email.
  4. Weeks three and four, show it: post three Reels or carousels, each solving one small problem the offer covers and each ending with the same one-word keyword, such as RESUME or SLOT.
  5. End of week four, read the numbers: keyword comments, DMs, link taps and payments. Compare them with the pass mark, then change one thing, not five.

Posts that carry an offer without sounding like an advert

At this size relevance beats reach. Four kinds of post carry an offer without feeling like an advert:

  • The answer post: take a question people keep sending you and answer it in 30 seconds. It proves you know the subject, and the keyword offers the long version.
  • The proof post: show the thing itself, such as a page from the PDF, the template in use or the finished design, so people can see what ₹299 gets them.
  • The making-of post: how you built the product, what you left out, and why.
  • The plain-offer post: what it is, who it is for and what it costs, in one post, after two posts about the same problem.

Pin the post that explains your offer best, and use the same keyword in a Story highlight, so a visitor who arrives next month finds the same next step.

Comment-to-DM: answering fast when ten people ask at once

When ten people comment your keyword within the hour, replying by hand turns into a chore, and people drift off while they wait. A comment-to-DM tool replies under the comment and sends a private message. DMFast, which publishes this guide, is one, for Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages. Any tool built on Meta’s official API works within the same limits. The steps look like this:

  1. Someone comments RESUME under your Reel.
  2. A short public reply appears under their comment, such as “Sent, check your DMs”.
  3. They get a private message. It is plain text, because Instagram allows no links or buttons in the first message: “Hi! Reply YES and I’ll send you the resume template.”
  4. When they reply, the link arrives as a card with a button. If you also want their email, ask for it in the chat before the link goes out.

Meta’s rules explain the shape. You get one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and a follow-up is allowed only if the person replies, within 24 hours of that reply. That is why the first message asks a question instead of delivering a link.

It suits a small account because thirty keyword comments are enough to test an offer, and each one leaves you a name and a reason to follow up. Email capture exports to CSV. The free plan covers one account, 100 people a month and 10 emails, and paid plans lift the people and email limits. DMFast does not work with WhatsApp, TikTok, Threads or personal Instagram accounts, and its store (digital products, free lead magnets and 1-on-1 bookings) is for India only, through Razorpay.

Brand deals at this size: what to say yes to

Some brands work with accounts under 10,000 followers, and there is no standard minimum, so each brand decides. Local businesses are a likely first yes: a salon, a cafe, a coaching centre or a boutique often wants someone from the area who talks to real customers, and has no agency to run it. Pitch two or three you already use, with one specific idea for a post.

Before you accept a free product in return for a post, do the sum: the product’s price against your hours of filming and editing. For example, a ₹400 serum for a Reel that takes five hours is a poor trade, while headphones you were about to buy anyway may be fine. Say yes to barter only for things you would use, and keep a written note of what you agreed.

In India, gifted items need a label too. ASCI’s influencer guidelines count free products, even ones nobody asked you to feature, as a connection to the brand, and they want the label at the start of the post, not tucked into the bio or the last line. “Free gift”, “Collaboration” and Instagram’s paid partnership tag are all on its accepted list.

Mistakes that cost small accounts months

  • Building the product first. Ask ten people and sell a few before you spend weeks on a course nobody asked for.
  • Working for “exposure” repeatedly. One free collaboration can teach you something; by the fifth, you are doing unpaid work.
  • Running a giveaway to look bigger. People who followed only for the prize have no reason to buy, and a bigger total with the same number of comments lowers your engagement rate.
  • Waiting for 10,000 followers. Nothing about selling switches on at 10,000. Your first buyers are already in your comments and DMs.

This month’s checklist

  • A professional account and a bio that says what to do next.
  • One offer written in a single sentence, with a price.
  • Ten past engagers asked whether they would pay.
  • A payment link that takes UPI, tested with a small real payment.
  • One free sample that collects an email address.
  • Three posts that each end with the same keyword.
  • A sheet that counts keyword comments, DMs, link taps and sales.

Questions people ask

Can I make money with 500 followers on Instagram?

Yes, mainly by selling your own offer: a service, a small digital product or a booking. Instagram’s Gifts open at 500 followers (professional account, 18 or over, eligible country), but each Star you receive is worth US$0.01 to you, so Gifts will be a small extra, not the plan.

How many followers do you need to sell on Instagram?

None. Selling needs an offer, a way to be paid and people who pay attention to you. A few hundred engaged followers can be enough for a first sale, while thousands of silent ones may not be.

Do brands pay accounts with under 10,000 followers?

Some do, but there is no standard minimum, and some small-account offers are for free products only. Ask for payment when the work is worth more than the product, agree the details in writing, and label the post if you received anything of value.

What is the easiest thing to sell first?

Something you already know how to do, in a small size: a one-page template, a checklist or a 30-minute call. Start with what your followers already ask you about in comments and DMs.

Do I need a website to sell on Instagram?

No. A payment link or store page, plus a way to deliver the file or confirm the booking, is enough to start. Links typed into captions aren’t clickable, so people reach yours through the bio, a Story link sticker or a DM.

Does Instagram allow comment-to-DM?

Yes, through Meta’s official API: one private reply per comment, within 7 days, with the first message as plain text. The risky tools are the ones that ask for your password or work around those limits.
